“UMA DECEPÇÃO! Infelizmente a higiene fica muito aquém de um resort 5 estrelas, quando chegamos estava tudo limpo e cheiroso, no entanto após 8 dias de estadia os lençóis nunca foram mudados (nem mesmo depois de terem sido deixados caídos para fora da cama), a limpeza do quarto não era feita e as toalhas apenas foram mudadas quando deixadas no chão e inclusive cheguei um dia ao quarto às 18h e não tinha uma única toalha no quarto (nem de rosto nem de banho), dirigi-me 3 vezes à receção ao que me responderam sempre que estavam com problemas com a lavandaria e que iriam entregar as toalhas em breve, sugeri que me fossem entregues toalhas de piscina ou roupões do spa para poder tomar banho mas só após 1h30 e ameaçar fazer queixa por escrito me foram entregues as toalhas. Refeições pouco variadas e por vezes bastante picantes, bebidas alcoólicas de baixa qualidade.”

Most guests at this hotel appear to be over 60. So, when you see one-star reviews complaining about mattress firmness and towels, take them with a pinch of salt. Here’s a realistic overview from a younger traveller’s perspective.
Hotel & Rooms – 7/10
The hotel and grounds are lovely. I stayed in a standard room, which was more than sufficient. After all, you shouldn’t be spending most of your holiday in your room! Some negative reviews seem to reflect the different priorities of the older clientele.
Food – 4/10
The standard all-inclusive buffet is disappointing. Poor quality, limited variety, and breakfast is absolute pandemonium!
However, the à la carte restaurants are fantastic, easily 8–9/10. You get three visits included in the standard package, with several restaurants across the Meliá resorts. Make the most of them!
Pools & Entertainment – 7/10
The pools are your typical resort pools, pretty nice overall. The guys working around them are awesome! Friendly, energetic, and always trying to get the party going. Unfortunately, given the clientele, there’s not much of a party to get going!
The evening entertainment is similar. They try, they really do. It’s nothing spectacular, but credit where it’s due.
Beach – 6/10
Had I known more about Cape Verde, I wouldn’t have booked a Meliá resort on this stretch of coastline.
The sand is coarse, the turquoise water isn’t particularly clear, and the Bikini Beach area and man-made concrete structures spoil the scenery somewhat. The loungers are also quite far from the water.
Santa Maria Beach is considerably better. Fine white sand, crystal-clear turquoise water, and a fantastic atmosphere. The vibes are just so much better!
One massive positive, however, is the snorkelling! The variety of fish and marine life is outstanding. Apparently, two turtles also regularly swim in the area, although I didn’t personally see them.
The Level Upgrade – Worth It?
At approximately €50 per person per night, I don’t think so. For two people over six nights, that’s €600 extra, largely for better food and a few additional perks.
Personally, I’d rather put that money towards a better hotel closer to Santa Maria. The standard package is perfectly adequate, particularly with the excellent à la carte restaurants included.
Overall – A Good 4-Star, Not a 5-Star
I’ve stayed at plenty of hotels across Africa, and this certainly isn’t a five-star hotel, even by regional standards.
Realistically, it’s a decent four-star. Lovely grounds, good amenities, fantastic pool staff, and excellent à la carte dining. Unfortunately, the buffet disappoints, the beach could be better, and the atmosphere caters heavily towards an older crowd.
That said, some of the overly picky reviews about mattresses, towels, and other minor issues are disproportionate and don’t fairly represent the hotel.
My advice: If you’re younger and want beautiful beaches, a lively atmosphere, and more energy, stay closer to Santa Maria.
If you’re after a quieter resort holiday, Meliá Llana is perfectly fine. Just don’t expect a true five-star experience.”
