Between Tarifa and Barbate, surrounded by windmills and fields full of sunflowers, this city has a history that dates back to Roman times. The old city began to form around Zahara Castle and Jadraza Palace, a huge defensive fortress to protect against pirates and buccaneers. Today the area is home to markets, musical performances and movie screenings. Chancas are a type of tank that was built inside the castle to preserve fish. The best holiday plan in Zahara de los Atunes is to just bask in the sun on any of its four magnificent beaches: Zahara de los Atunes, Atlanterra, Cañuelo or Búnker beaches, the latter with a bunker built during the Second World War.
