The beautiful university in the upper part of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and also responsible for the vibrant and youthful atmosphere in the city. You could almost feel like a student yourself as you walk between the faculties.

The Joanina Library is the jewel in the crown of the oldest university in Portugal. Admiring its beauty and discovering its history is an experience you must not miss in Coimbra. Away from the university area, the rest of the city is like a bustling roller coaster with steep up-and-down streets and a great atmosphere. If you want to see the best views of the River Mondego, climb up the hills until you reach the Plaza del Comercio. The good news is that once you reach there, you can sit down at any of its bars and enjoy a coffee or hot chocolate. When you’ve finished, we recommend you climb the 150 steps of the staircase that leads back to the University. If you still have the strength, you can then cross the river and visit Santa Clara Convent.
