On the border with Belgium and the Netherlands, over the centuries Aachen witnessed the coronation of many of the emperors of the Holy Roman Empire. Charlemagne proclaimed it capital and it became his preferred Imperial residence. Among many monuments, one of the most famous is the beautiful cathedral in the heart of the old city, the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in Germany.
