Beautiful modernist façades adorn the seafront in this old fishing village in the north-east of Spain. 4 kilometres of coastline bathed by the Mediterranean include Garraf Park, a protected natural area with unique hiking routes.
A Mediterranean breeze
Walking along the seafront promenade with the sea on one side and the beautiful façades of modernist mansions on the other, is an experience you cannot fail to enjoy in Sitges. The old part of the city has many buildings that the local emigrants built on their return after making their fortune in the Americas. The Plaza del Ayuntamiento is home to the Gothic-style Town Hall and the Bacardi Museum. The history of Sitges is closely linked to that of the Bacardi family, that emigrated to Cuba and then made a huge fortune in the rum industry. Sitges keeps all its charm alive by perfectly preserving its historic centre, the place where its famous Carnival is held every year. The beaches to visit include Balmins, La Ribera or Aiguadolç. The city is one of the most popular destinations for gay travellers in Europe and hosts the annual Sitges Gay Pride events.
