The first Christmas markets in Madrid start to be set up at the end of November and the beginning of December, just when the city starts to fill with lights and the Christmas atmosphere is felt in its streets.
For Christmas 2026, the Madrid Tourism Board has scheduled the opening of the Plaza Mayor Christmas Market for the end of November, although the exact day is still to be confirmed. The opening of La Navideña in Plaza de España is also planned for those dates, although the final dates have not yet been announced.
Other events already have a confirmed calendar. The XXXIX Craft Market Fair of the Community of Madrid will open its doors on 1 December 2026 on the Paseo de Recoletos. The opening of the Villa de Vallecas 2026-2027 Christmas Craft Market is also scheduled for that same day.
Therefore, if you want to start enjoying the Christmas markets in Madrid from the beginning of the season, the end of November and the first few days of December are good dates to visit. However, it is advisable to check the calendar for each market before organising your visit, especially for those events whose dates are still to be confirmed.
Christmas does not necessarily end on Christmas Eve. Some of the Christmas markets in Madrid remain open during the last days of December and even after New Year's Day.
The Plaza Mayor Christmas Market is scheduled until 31 December 2026, while the Craft Market Fair of the Community of Madrid will remain open until the 30th, although it will be closed on 25 December.
If you are going to be in Madrid after New Year's Eve, you will also find options. La Navideña in Plaza de España is scheduled until the beginning of January, although its exact dates are still to be confirmed. For its part, the Villa de Vallecas craft market is scheduled to continue until 7 January 2027.
If your getaway coincides with Christmas, New Year's Eve or Three Kings Day, it is best to check the dates for each market before organising your route, as not all of them have the same calendar.

If there is one place we immediately associate with Christmas in Madrid, it is the Plaza Mayor. Its traditional market is one of those plans that is worth repeating every December, even if it is just to walk among the stalls and get carried away by the atmosphere.
The market brings together 104 stalls and is especially dedicated to the most typical products of these dates: figures for the nativity scene, Christmas decorations, toys and classic joke items. It is precisely this traditional character that distinguishes it from other markets more focused on crafts or gastronomy.
In addition, its location invites you to continue your walk. From here you can walk towards Sol, stroll along Calle Mayor or get lost in the streets of the Madrid of the Austrias. A good option if you want to combine a Christmas market and tourism in the centre of Madrid.

For those looking for handmade gifts and different products, the Craft Market Fair is one of the great Christmas events in Madrid.
The 2026 edition will bring together around 130 workshops on the Paseo de Recoletos, between Colón and Cibeles. Pieces of ceramics, pottery, jewellery, leather goods, costume jewellery, artistic glass, toys, textile decoration and many other traditional trades will pass through its stalls.
It is a market to explore without too much hurry, looking at improvised shop windows and searching for that gift that doesn't look like it came from just another shop. Most of the artisans come from the Community of Madrid, although professionals from other autonomous communities also participate.
And the location is great: after shopping you can continue your walk towards Cibeles, the Salamanca neighbourhood or the Paseo del Arte.
🗓️ Dates: 1 – 30 December 2026. Closed on 25 December.

La Navideña turns Plaza de España into one of the liveliest corners of the city every winter. Its proposal combines a market, gastronomy and Christmas activities, making it an especially attractive alternative if you are looking for more than just shopping stalls.
For its sixth edition, scheduled for 2026, the Madrid Tourism Board has announced 40 stalls with artisanal products, as well as a gastronomic area and a natural ice rink.
And there is also room here to treat yourself: from the classic hot chocolate with churros to international options like German mulled wine. A combination that fits especially well with a cold December afternoon.
Its location, between Gran Vía, the Royal Palace and the start of Calle Princesa, also makes it easy to include in a Christmas route through the centre.
🗓️ Dates: to be confirmed for 2026. Expected from the end of November to the beginning of January.
📍 Location: Plaza de España, s/n, 28008 Madrid.

Christmas is also experienced far from the large squares in the centre. In Villa de Vallecas, a craft fair with a distinct neighbourhood character is planned for this season.
The call from the Madrid City Council includes its installation on the Paseo Federico García Lorca, with a maximum of 15 stalls. Due to its size, it is a different option to the large markets in the centre and may be interesting for those who want to discover the Christmas programme in Madrid's neighbourhoods.
In addition, the call includes the possibility of installing two attractions between the ornamental fountains on the boulevard, which can add a more family-friendly touch to the route.
The final commercial offer will depend, of course, on the development and awarding of the market.
🗓️ Dates: 1 December 2026 – 7 January 2027.
📍 Location: Paseo Federico García Lorca, between numbers 12 and 19, Villa de Vallecas, Madrid.
