In Tenerife, Christmas is lived with open doors. Shopping can start among the stalls in a square and end by the sea, and there is no need to wait for nightfall to go for a walk with the children. In Santa Cruz, Puerto de la Cruz or Arona, Christmas markets and fairs mingle with crafts, gastronomy, music and activities that bring the festivities to different corners of the island.
Variety is also part of the charm. Santa Cruz concentrates one of the most recognisable proposals in the plaza de España, while Puerto de la Cruz focuses on crafts and Arona combines markets, local products and Canarian folklore. They are different formats, but they all have something in common: a brighter, open-air Christmas than what we find in many Christmas markets in Europe.

The Christmas markets in Tenerife do not have a single calendar. Each municipality organises its own fairs and activities, so some proposals run for several days while others are concentrated on specific dates in December.
Santa Cruz, Puerto de la Cruz and Arona bring together some of the island's main proposals, with craft markets, local products, gastronomy and Christmas-related activities. In previous years, the first markets began in mid-December and some lasted until the first few days of January.
The dates for Christmas 2026-2027 are still pending confirmation. If you are thinking of travelling to Tenerife during these holidays, it is highly recommended to check the programme for each municipality before choosing your travel dates.
The duration of the markets changes according to the municipality and the programme each year. Some fairs are concentrated in the days before Christmas, while other activities continue during the holidays and run until the first few days of January.
For this reason, both a getaway in December and a trip during the holidays can find Christmas proposals in different parts of the island. Santa Cruz, Puerto de la Cruz and Arona offer different atmospheres and allow you to combine the markets with other typical Tenerife plans.
For Christmas 2026-2027, the final dates have not yet been confirmed. It is advisable to check the calendar for each municipality before travelling, as it may vary from one season to another. This type of difference is also found when visiting the different Christmas markets in Spain.

In Tenerife there is no single market that concentrates all the Christmas of the island. The experience changes quite a bit depending on the municipality: Santa Cruz offers an urban and central market; Puerto de la Cruz focuses on crafts; and Arona incorporates local products, gastronomy and Canarian folklore into its Christmas proposals.

During the holidays, the Plaza de España becomes one of the points where the Christmas atmosphere of Santa Cruz is most concentrated. The Christmas Market brings together stalls with craft products and items related to these dates and has the advantage of being in the heart of the city, next to the sea and a few steps from the main shopping areas.
Its location allows you to combine shopping with an afternoon in the capital. You can start in the Plaza de España, continue through the streets of the centre and then head towards the area of the Plaza del Príncipe or the Nuestra Señora de África Market. The city is perfect for walking, linking small stops instead of dedicating the whole day to a single market.

Puerto de la Cruz opts for a Christmas more linked to crafts. The Plaza Reyes Católicos hosted both the Craft Fair and the II Christmas Craft Market last year, with stalls dedicated to handmade creations and products designed as gifts.
The proposal fits especially well with the character of Puerto de la Cruz. After visiting the stalls, the walk can continue through the historic centre, down towards the Plaza del Charco or towards the seafront promenade. Here the market works almost like a small stop within a day to discover the city.
It is also a good option for those who value finding less conventional gifts. Compared to more commercial shopping, craft fairs allow you to discover different pieces and take away something that has a more direct relationship with the place you are visiting.

In the south of Tenerife, Arona brings part of Christmas to its neighbourhoods and commercial areas. The Medianías Christmas Market is held in Buzanada and is directly linked to the traders of the municipality's midlands.
The proposal brings together stalls, food and Canarian pastries, and activities designed for families. Its character is more local than that of the markets in the tourist areas, and that is precisely where much of its interest lies: it allows you to get closer to a Christmas related to the shops and residents of Buzanada, Cabo Blanco and La Camella.
It is an especially interesting visit if you want to discover another side of Arona beyond Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos. The market can be combined with a tour of the midlands and other Christmas activities that the municipality distributes throughout its different centres.

The Arona Folk Fest deserves a special mention because it is not a conventional Christmas market. It is a craft and gastronomy fair accompanied by performances by folk groups from the municipality and, during the holidays, it incorporates several special Christmas days.
The combination of crafts, gastronomic products and traditional Canarian music gives it a very different character to other markets. It is one of those proposals that is worth visiting not only for the shopping, but to get closer to the local culture during the holidays and enjoy the promenade at the same time.

Tenerife allows you to add some plans to the markets that would hardly have the same charm in another destination. If you are travelling as a family, here are some ideas so that the getaway is not just about shopping:

In Tenerife, accommodation changes the experience quite a bit because the markets are spread between the north, the metropolitan area and the south of the island. If you want to visit several, the most practical thing is to have a car and plan each day by area, instead of trying to link them all on the same day.

The choice depends above all on how you want to experience the island. To focus on Puerto de la Cruz and the north, the area around this town is the most convenient; if you prefer to combine markets with a few days on the coast and family plans, the south offers more alternatives. And if the idea is to visit several municipalities, Tenerife invites you to make the journeys part of the getaway itself.
