This former industrial city in the German Ruhr has completely changed its course to become an eclectic city with a wide range of cultural and recreational facilities. A great place to spend a few days relaxing with the family.
Reinventing an industrial past
The remains of a splendid industrial past still survive in this city in North Rhine near the border with the Netherlands. Standing 120-metres tall, the Gasometer built in 1929 has now been converted into a popular cultural centre. The modern Neue Mitte is the central hub of the city, its heart. One of its key attractions is Centro, the largest shopping centre in Germany. If you plan to spend a few days on family holidays in Oberhausen, you should not miss the wonderful Legoland nor the Sea Life theme park, which has more than 5,000 marine species and the largest shark tank in the country. One of the most iconic sculptures in the city is the Zauberlehrling or Sorcerer’s Apprentice, a 35-metre-tall work of art inspired by a poem by Goethe.
