The Cap de Formentor is a place that impresses you even before you arrive, with a road that winds through mountains, cliffs that drop directly into the sea, and spectacular views. At the northernmost tip of the island, it is known by the Mallorcans as the meeting point of the four winds, and it offers one of the most stunning landscapes in all the Balearic Islands.
Here, the Serra de Tramuntana plunges into the sea, creating precipices of sheer vertigo that exceed three hundred metres in height and will give you goosebumps.
Visiting the Cap de Formentor will leave you with an unforgettable image. The combination of the grey mountain rock, the dark green of the pine trees, and the deep blue of the sea creates a contrast that seems more typical of a Nordic country than the Mediterranean.
If you are planning a route around Mallorca, for me, Cap de Formentor is an almost mandatory stop. And I'll tell you why.

The landscape of Cap de Formentor is its most outstanding feature. Here, everything seems much more natural than in other areas of the island. The cliffs are enormous, the sea has an incredible colour, and the views change with every bend.
One of the most famous spots is the Cap de Formentor viewpoint. From there, you will have a spectacular panoramic view of the north coast of Mallorca. So much so, that many people come here just to enjoy the views and its famous sunset. Watching the sun sink below the horizon behind the mountains, as the cliffs turn reddish and golden hues, is a natural spectacle that will leave you speechless.
Another major attraction is the Cap de Formentor road. Although it has many curves, the journey is part of the experience. It is considered one of the most beautiful drives in Spain.
There is also the Cap de Formentor beach, more commonly known as Formentor beach. A stretch of fine white sand surrounded by a dense pine forest that reaches almost to the water's edge.
Checking the location of Cap de Formentor is key to getting there directly and avoiding any unforeseen issues, as access to the tip is quite protected to ensure the conservation of this natural space.

The entire landscape is part of a protected natural area where the mountains meet the Bay of Pollença on one side and the open sea on the other.
If you're wondering how to get to Cap de Formentor, my recommendation is to go by car from Palma; the journey usually takes between an hour and a half and two hours, depending on traffic. However, during some summer months, there are access restrictions for cars during certain hours.
Another option is to take one of the shuttle buses that connect the area with Port de Pollença. There is a public bus (line 334) that departs from Alcudia and Port de Pollença and makes stops at the beach, viewpoints, and the lighthouse.
A completely different alternative is to arrive by boat from Port de Pollença, by booking an excursion with one of the specialized companies. Seeing the cape from the sea, looking up at those giant stone walls, is a very impressive experience.
Parking at Cap de Formentor can be quite challenging, especially during high season, as the official car park is quite small and the number of visitors is enormous.
A few metres away, next to the main viewpoint, there is a small free car park, but it also fills up quickly. My advice, as always, is to get up early or, if not, opt for public transport.
To get an idea of what you'll find and whether it's truly worth it, you can search for opinions about Cap de Formentor online. You'll see that most agree it's one of the most "awe-inspiring" places in Mallorca, with unparalleled natural beauty. One of the most frequently repeated opinions is that the landscape of curves and cliffs is something you have to see at least once in your life.

Like any other destination, visiting Cap de Formentor requires some planning, especially during the summer months when there is a lot of tourist traffic and some rules may change seasonally.
The surroundings of Cap de Formentor offer many different options for a full day out without having to rush from one place to another. Here are three suggestions to make the most of the northern part of Mallorca:
Also known as Mirador de Es Colomer, this is the quintessential viewpoint of Cap de Formentor. It is located a few kilometres from the start of the road and has a stone staircase path that runs along the cliff itself. From here, you can see the famous Colomer islet, making it one of the best spots for taking photographs on the entire peninsula.
Halfway along the road, you can turn off towards the Formentor beach area. The pine forest reaches almost to the water's edge, offering perfect natural shade to lay down your towel.
Its crystal-clear, calm waters will remind you of a swimming pool, although the sandy strip is narrow and fills up quickly in summer. If you go by car, I advise you to get up early, as the official car park has limited spaces and a rather high daily fee.
If you want to escape the crowds a little, take the small, narrow turn-off that climbs up to Talaia d'Albercutx, an old 16th-century defence tower. From the base of the tower, you will have an even higher view of the entire Formentor peninsula and the Bay of Pollença, an ideal spot to breathe in the peace of the mountains.
