The simplicity of a fishing village

A great way to start exploring Gijón is to walk to the top of the walled Santa Catalina Headland. This area is home to Cimavilla, the old fishing district and the oldest district in the city. A mazy network of streets well-known for the beautiful façade of the Antigua Pescadería, the Church of San Pedro Apóstol and the Jovellanos Birthplace Museum, the latter with an interesting tour of Asturian art. Other great places to discover in Gijón are El Elogio del Horizonte, a work by the prestigious sculptor Eduardo Chillida. The Escalerona on San Lorenzo Beach is the icon of the city. And you mustn’t miss the experience of seeing the Plaza Mayor lit up at night or touring the international art centre at the Palacio de Revillagigedo.
