This is one of the destinations with the greatest amount of personality in the north of Asturias. Art forms part of everything in this beautiful city open to the sea and its lively estuary. The historic centre is one of the best preserved in northern Spain.
A walk through the Middle Ages
The Plaza de España in the heart of the historic city centre is a perfect starting point for discovering Avilés. Home to City Hall, it is considered one of the 20 most charming squares in Spain. And not only due to the historical importance of its buildings. It’s also the perfect place to try the cider! The Niemeyer Cultural Centre also gives the city a certain avant-garde touch. Located on the industrial bank of the estuary, it is the only work designed by the Brazilian architect in the whole of Spain. Other photogenic sites include the Calle Galiana, one of the most beautiful in the country, the fishing district of Sabugo, and the Palacio Valdés Theatre, with all the charm of the great old opera houses.
