The Cenote Azul is one of the most accessible and popular cenotes in the Riviera Maya, perfect for enjoying a unique day in nature, very close to Playa del Carmen and Tulum.
There are places that have a special charm from the very first moment you set foot in them, and the Cenote Azul is one of those corners that makes you disconnect from the world from the very first moment.
Unlike large enclosed caves where darkness is the protagonist, here you find a huge open-air natural pool surrounded by vegetation on all sides, where sunlight illuminates the water throughout the day, allowing you to appreciate its incredible blue tones with absolute clarity.
Its family atmosphere, how easy it is to access the water, and the variety of swimming areas make it a very interesting option for those visiting the Riviera Maya for the first time. Furthermore, it is located between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, next to the 307 federal highway, making it very easy to combine the visit with other places in the area.
So that you do not have a single doubt left and can organise yourself in every detail, I leave you this guide to the Cenote Azul in Mexico in which I tell you everything you need to know before, during, and after your visit.

Not all cenotes offer the same experience, and the Cenote Azul in the Riviera Maya is a clear example of that. Here, the great attraction is its spaciousness and the freedom to enjoy the water without age or physical condition being an impediment.
It is an open and bright cenote divided into several swimming areas, with areas of different depths that allow for swimming and snorkelling. There is also a natural platform from which you can jump into the water, although it is advisable to check the site's instructions and the conditions at the time before doing so.
One of the things that stands out the most is the colour of the water, which, depending on the sun's incidence, changes from turquoise tones to an intense blue that gives the place its name. In addition, the incredible transparency of the water allows you to observe the bottom even from the shore.
In the Cenote Azul, vegetation plays a major role, with tropical trees, palm trees, and native plants surrounding it on all sides, which makes it retain a natural environment in the middle of the jungle of Quintana Roo.

The privileged location of the Cenote Azul makes it a destination present in the vast majority of routes through the Riviera Maya, allowing you to combine your visit with other destinations on the same day.
Address:
In the heart of the Riviera Maya, the Cenote Azul is located between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, in the municipality of Solidaridad, very close to Puerto Aventuras, in the state of Quintana Roo.
Cancún-Tulum Highway, km 266, 77734 Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, Mexico.
How to get to the Cenote Azul:
Surrounded by tropical jungle and located a few metres from the federal highway, knowing how to get to the Cenote Azul is not complicated, whether you are travelling by car or using public transport.
Being so close to federal highway 307, my recommendation for going to the Cenote Azul is to rent a car. If you are in Playa del Carmen, it will take you around twenty minutes, while from Tulum the journey is around thirty minutes. From Puerto Aventuras, you will be there in about ten minutes if there is not much traffic.
A widely used alternative to the car are the 'colectivos' (shared vans) that continuously travel the highway between Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum. Once you arrive at the stop, you will only have to walk a few minutes to the entrance of the cenote.
And if you prefer, there are also organised excursions that include this cenote within routes that combine several places in the region.
Parking at the Cenote Azul:
The site has a large parking area located next to the main access, so you will normally have no problems leaving your car.
However, during weekends and in high season it usually receives a large number of visitors. If you prefer to enjoy the surroundings with more tranquillity, my advice is to arrive first thing in the morning, when the water is much calmer and there are still few people.
Cenote Azul opening hours:
Open from Monday to Sunday from 8:30am to 5:00pm.
Cenote Azul price:
General admission is currently around 180 Mexican pesos per adult, although the price may vary. The site also offers the rental of life jackets, snorkelling equipment, and lockers, services that are paid for separately. It is recommended to carry cash, as the site itself advises having cash for rentals and may request a security deposit.

When taking a look at the reviews of the Cenote Azul before going, you will see that they are very positive, with the majority agreeing that it is one of the most complete, spectacular, and family-friendly cenotes in Quintana Roo, being perfect for both adults and small children thanks to the different depths.
Many reviews appreciate the soft rock floor in the shallow areas and the natural shade provided by the surrounding trees, making it an ideal place to spend several hours without excessive heat.
To provide a counterpoint, as it is such an accessible cenote, from midday in high season or at weekends there is usually quite a crowd. The key, as always, is to arrive as early as possible.
Although visiting the Cenote Azul in Playa del Carmen does not present any difficulty, especially when accessing the water, it is worth taking into account a series of recommendations to be able to enjoy the experience to the fullest:

The location, in the heart of Quintana Roo, allows you to see many other attractions in the area after your swim, all in the same day. You have multiple options to choose from depending on what you are looking for:
Just five minutes away is Puerto Aventuras, a quiet coastal and residential community known for its exclusive full-service marina and a safe and relaxed atmosphere, ideal for escaping the large crowds of the region. You can stroll through its yacht marina, enjoy its golf courses, relax in Fátima Bay, or eat fresh seafood in the restaurants with terraces facing the water that line the marina's shopping centre.
Very close by is the Jardín del Edén, also known as cenote Ponderosa, an open cenote surrounded by vegetation and especially popular among those who practise snorkelling and diving. Its waters of different depths allow you to enjoy both calmer areas and deeper areas.
Very close to the Cenote Azul is the cenote Cristalino, another of the popular places to enjoy the water in this part of Quintana Roo. Its surroundings combine open areas, swimming areas, and small cave formations that can be explored during your visit. Its transparent waters allow you to especially enjoy snorkelling, while the vegetation surrounding the cenote provides a natural and quiet environment. It is a good option to complete the route if you want to visit several cenotes in the same area and discover how each one offers a different experience.
About fifteen minutes heading south you will arrive at Akumal, one of the most famous places on the Caribbean coast for the constant presence of sea turtles that feed in its protected seagrasses. It is one of the best destinations in the world to snorkel alongside these animals in their natural habitat, always respecting local ecological regulations that prohibit touching them or using polluting sunscreens, and which require you to carry out the tour with a life jacket and accompanied by a certified guide to guarantee the conservation of this fragile marine ecosystem.
Continuing south you will find Tulum, one of the best-known destinations in the Riviera Maya, famous especially for its archaeological zone, an ancient Mayan city located next to the Caribbean Sea and one of the most emblematic places on the coast of Quintana Roo. In addition to touring its ancient constructions and enjoying the sea views, you can take advantage of the visit to stroll through the centre of Tulum or go to one of its beaches, combining nature, culture, and the Caribbean coast in the same day.
