Hidden in the heart of Cap Cana (an exclusive residential and tourist area located on the east coast of the Dominican Republic), Hoyo Azul is a stunning cenote with a beautiful turquoise colour that represents one of the most spectacular geological corners in the entire Dominican Republic and, without a doubt, one of the places to visit in Punta Cana.
A natural spectacle, the Hoyo Azul cenote is a place that completely breaks with the beach landscape and will leave you speechless. What makes it so special is that it is located at the foot of a huge limestone cliff covered in tropical vegetation, far from the coastal environment that characterises Punta Cana.
It is located inside the exclusive area of Cap Cana. This natural cenote combines a walk along a path through the tropical jungle with a swim in a natural pool surrounded by limestone, where light filters through the walls and vegetation. It is the perfect refuge to beat the tropical heat while enjoying an unforgettable experience full of beauty.
Although it is often compared to other cenotes on the Yucatán Peninsula, the Hoyo Azul in Cap Cana stands out for the intensity of its natural cobalt blue. This shade is due to an optical effect known as a halocline. As it is in a limestone cavity near the coast, three different bodies of water converge in the cenote: underground fresh water, salt water that filters in from the sea, and rainwater that runs down the cliff walls. Since these waters have different densities and salinity levels, they do not mix immediately, but rather form overlapping layers. When sunlight enters the cenote directly and passes through these pure and transparent layers, a refractive optical effect is generated that acts as a filter, making our eyes perceive that intense cobalt blue tone. The clarity of the water is such that from the upper platform you can see the rocky bottom and the stone formations under the surface with total sharpness. What makes the experience even more impressive is its location, as it is a pool hidden at the foot of a 75-metre-high limestone cliff, completely surrounded by tropical jungle.

Unlike other attractions in Punta Cana, where the Caribbean Sea is the star, Hoyo Azul, in the Dominican Republic, offers a very different landscape. Here, water springs from a system of underground rivers that have been shaping the limestone for thousands of years to form this spectacular cenote surrounded by vertical walls covered in vegetation.
The first thing that catches your attention when you finish the path and look out onto the wooden walkway is the colour of the water, an intense blue that gives the place its name and can take on different shades depending on how the light hits it. The contrast between the water, the limestone walls, and the green of the vegetation creates one of the most characteristic landscapes in Cap Cana.
The Hoyo Azul pool is located at the foot of a limestone cliff about 75 metres high, covered in tropical vegetation, orchids, and ferns. The walls of this natural dome isolate the environment, blocking the sun and creating unique acoustics where the sound of water and the singing of birds stand out. It is an atmosphere of absolute disconnection.
Regarding the depth of Hoyo Azul, the deepest point of the pool reaches approximately 15 metres. Due to the extreme transparency of the water, when you look down you will have the feeling of being suspended over a blue abyss.
Furthermore, it should be noted that Hoyo Azul is part of Scape Park, a natural and adventure park where you can combine your visit to the cenote with other activities, such as exploring caves, zip-lining, or walking along paths surrounded by tropical vegetation. For this reason, you can turn your visit into a much more complete excursion and dedicate a good part of the day to discovering the surroundings.

Address:
The Hoyo Azul cenote is located in the southern area of Cap Cana, within the Scape Park ecotourism park, surrounded by tropical forest and protected by a limestone cliff.

Its location within Scape Park means there is not much doubt about how to get to Hoyo Azul, as access is perfectly organised and signposted, so you cannot get lost. You must keep in mind that to enter you have to buy a ticket to the park.

If you come by car, you will find a free and guarded parking area next to the entrance to Scape Park, from where you can access the grounds directly to begin your visit.

Although visiting the cenote can take you a morning, it would be a shame to leave the area without discovering other interesting spots just a few kilometres away. These are the best options divided between what you can do in the park itself and the surrounding area:
Cueva de Las Ondas
This is an illuminated underground cavity accessed by wooden walkways. The route passes between stalactite and stalagmite formations until reaching a crystal-clear water pool where the ancient Taíno people performed sacred rituals.
Zip Line Eco Splash
This is a zip line circuit fixed directly onto the El Farallón cliff. The main feature that differentiates it from other adventure routes in the area is that the final section of the lines ends with a direct landing in the water.
Juanillo Beach
Located about ten minutes by car from the park, it is one of the best-known public beaches in the area. It stands out for its extensive strip of fine white sand that barely retains the heat of the sun, and for its calm, shallow waters.
Cap Cana Marina
It is located very close to the park and functions as the main marina in the area. It is an ideal area for walking along the docks next to the yachts, offering a commercial and gastronomic environment that contrasts completely with the vegetation of the cenote.
Ojos Indígenas Ecological Reserve
If you enjoy nature, the Ojos Indígenas Ecological Reserve is a 100% recommended visit. This protected forest is home to paths surrounded by tropical vegetation that lead to 12 crystal-clear fresh water lagoons, of which only three (such as Guamá) are suitable for swimming. For external visitors, entry is managed through the guided tour Los Ojos Eco Journey and costs 90 USD for adults (about 78 EUR) and 35 USD for children (about 30 EUR). Daily capacity is limited, so it is mandatory to book a place in advance, and it is strictly forbidden to use traditional sunscreens before entering the water.
