Lisbon experiences Christmas amidst illuminated squares, decorated shopping streets and the aroma of roasted chestnuts and traditional sweets. From the Baixa to Parque Eduardo VII, different areas of the Portuguese capital incorporate markets, stalls and family-friendly proposals that allow you to discover the city from another perspective during the holidays.
Christmas markets in Lisbon are also very different from one another. Alongside major offerings like Wonderland Lisboa, there are markets in the heart of the historic centre, such as the one in Rossio, and others linked to local commerce and life in areas like Alfama and Alvalade.
Added to this offer are the Portuguese gastronomy, the illuminations of the main avenues and the shop windows of Baixa, Chiado and Avenida da Liberdade. All this allows you to combine the markets with some of Lisbon's essential spots and organise different routes during a Christmas getaway.

Christmas celebrations spread across different areas of Lisbon. Baixa, Rossio, Chiado, Avenida da Liberdade and Praça do Comércio are some of the spaces that usually concentrate lighting, decoration and activities, while Parque Eduardo VII hosts Wonderland Lisboa.
Gastronomy occupies a particularly important place. Turismo de Lisboa identifies the bacalhau com todos, codfish accompanied by vegetables and potatoes, as one of the traditional dishes of the Christmas Eve dinner. Other family recipes and dishes associated with these dates also appear in Christmas celebrations.
Sweets complete the table. The bolo-rei, with its characteristic crown shape and candied fruits, is one of the great classics, along with rabanadas or fatias douradas, sonhos, broas, filhoses and coscorões. Turismo de Lisboa also documents the historical relationship of the Confeitaria Nacional with the introduction of the bolo-rei in the city.
During these weeks, markets, commerce, gastronomy and lighting combine with the usual activity of a capital where a good part of the celebrations takes place outdoors.
Lisbon markets do not all start at the same time. In recent seasons, the first stalls have appeared during November and the offer has gradually expanded until reaching its greatest variety during December.
The Rossio Christmas Market is usually among the first major markets in the centre to open, while Wonderland Lisboa has started later in Parque Eduardo VII. Campo Pequeno, Alvalade and Alfama are usually incorporated as the season progresses.
For 2026 there is already a particularly relevant confirmation: the Junta de Freguesia de Alvalade has officially announced the twelfth edition of its Christmas market.
In Wonderland Lisboa, Rossio, Campo Pequeno and Alfama, the official sources consulted still show the previous editions. Their historical calendars allow us to know the usual operation of these markets, but they do not transfer to 2026 as confirmed dates. The specific dates are indicated in the file for each market when there is official confirmation.

The selection takes into account the tourist importance, the surroundings, the real presence of commercial stalls and the interest of each market for different types of travellers. Events backed by Turismo de Lisboa, local administrations or organisers are prioritised.

Wonderland Lisboa is the city's largest Christmas proposal. It is set up in Parque Eduardo VII and Turismo de Lisboa presents it as the largest Christmas market in Portugal.
In its last officially published edition, it combined dozens of stalls dedicated to traditional gastronomy, pastries, crafts, regional products and fashion with a large Ferris wheel, ice rink, Santa's House, Christmas tree and other attractions. Its access was free, although certain attractions could operate independently.
Its location also allows you to continue the route towards Marquês de Pombal and Avenida da Liberdade and, from there, descend towards Restauradores, Rossio and the Baixa.
The edition corresponding to the new season does not yet appear with a specific calendar in the official information consulted.
🗓️ Dates: pending confirmation for 2026.
📍 Location: Parque Eduardo VII, Lisbon.
The Rossio Christmas Market occupies one of the most famous squares in the centre of Lisbon. Its location in Praça Dom Pedro IV allows it to be easily incorporated into a tour of Restauradores, Rua Augusta, Chiado and Praça do Comércio.
Turismo de Lisboa documents wooden stalls dedicated to crafts and traditional gastronomy. In the last published edition, there was also special lighting, music and the well-known Christmas train that runs through the streets of the Baixa.
Unlike the Christmas park character of Wonderland, Rossio functions as an urban market integrated into the historic centre. It is especially appropriate for those who want to alternate shopping at the stalls with monuments, historic cafés and shopping streets.
The official information located continues to correspond to the previous season, so its calendar is not used to date the 2026 edition.
🗓️ Dates: pending confirmation for 2026.
📍 Location: Praça Dom Pedro IV — Rossio, Lisbon.
The Mercado de Natal em Alvalade is currently one of the Lisbon markets with the most solid information for the new season: the Junta de Freguesia de Alvalade has officially confirmed its twelfth edition for 2026.
The previous edition brought together 67 vendors in traditional wooden stalls, with Portuguese crafts, Christmas decoration, fashion, accessories, sweets, savoury products and drinks. The programme also incorporated music, theatre, dance and Portuguese craft workshops.
The Junta de Freguesia itself highlights the importance of the market as a showcase for small businesses. In previous editions, there have also been children's activities and proposals related to sustainability and artisanal production.
It is an interesting alternative to experience a celebration more linked to local commerce and the daily life of Lisbon, outside the spaces with the highest tourist concentration.
🗓️ Dates: 10 - 20 December 2026.
📍 Location: Avenida da Igreja, Alvalade, Lisbon.

Alfama, A Christmas Village brings the Christmas market to one of the most recognisable historic neighbourhoods in Lisbon. The initiative is held in Largo do Chafariz de Dentro, in front of the Museu do Fado.
Turismo de Lisboa documents the project as an initiative promoted by the neighbourhood merchants' association, in collaboration with the Junta de Freguesia de Santa Maria Maior and with the support of the Lisbon City Council. Its objective combines the revitalisation of local commerce with a Christmas programme aimed at residents, families and visitors.
In the last published edition there were local crafts, gastronomy and a nativity scene, in addition to other Christmas proposals. The initiative was born in 2024, so it is quite a bit more recent than other markets in the city.
Its main attraction is the setting: it allows you to link the market with a walk through the streets of Alfama and discover a historic area of Lisbon during the holidays.
🗓️ Dates: pending confirmation for 2026.
📍 Location: Largo do Chafariz de Dentro, Alfama, Lisbon.
The Mercado de Natal de Campo Pequeno places special emphasis on gifts, crafts and creativity. Turismo de Lisboa identifies it as one of the city's Christmas events and documents numerous stalls aimed at finding different products to give as gifts.
In its recent editions it has brought together crafts, ceramics and other creative work, as well as gastronomic proposals and workshops. The market takes place in Campo Pequeno and its format is especially practical when looking to dedicate a few hours specifically to Christmas shopping.
Tourism sources have also documented designer items and Portuguese design inspired by both traditional trades and contemporary proposals.
The official edition currently published corresponds to a previous season. Until the organiser or Turismo de Lisboa update the information, its 2026 calendar should be considered pending.
🗓️ Dates: pending confirmation for 2026.
📍 Location: Campo Pequeno, Lisbon.
Portuguese Christmas offers enough specialities for gastronomy to be part of the tour of the markets. The bolo-rei is probably the most representative sweet: it has a crown shape and combines a dough enriched with nuts and candied fruits. Turismo de Lisboa considers it a classic of the Portuguese Christmas.
Also traditional are rabanadas or fatias douradas, sonhos, broas, filhoses and coscorões, among other sweets. To these are added roasted chestnuts, common in the streets of Lisbon during the cold months.
Cod also has a close relationship with these holidays. The bacalhau com todos, accompanied by vegetables and potatoes, is part of the Christmas Eve tradition documented by Turismo de Lisboa.
To buy, the offer depends on the market. Rossio combines crafts and gastronomy; Alvalade has brought together Portuguese crafts, decoration, fashion and accessories; Alfama focuses on local producers and commerce, and Campo Pequeno pays special attention to design and designer products. Wonderland expands the selection with crafts, regional products, fashion and pastries.
Christmas markets in Lisbon have different durations. Some are designed mainly for pre-Christmas Eve shopping, while larger format proposals can extend their activity during Christmas, New Year and the first days of January.
Rossio has traditionally finished before Christmas, as has Alvalade. The latter already has its 2026 calendar confirmed and will once again concentrate its activity in December.
Campo Pequeno usually presents a much shorter format, concentrated on specific days. In contrast, the latest official editions of Wonderland Lisboa and Alfama, A Christmas Village continued after Christmas and reached the first days of January.
These precedents allow us to understand the city's usual calendar, but they do not automatically transfer to 2026. Except for Alvalade, the main selected markets do not yet have official dates for the new season in the sources consulted.
Meliá Hotels International has establishments in Lisbon that allow access to different areas of the city. For this guide, only hotels whose existence and location can be verified are used, without assigning exact travel times when these depend on traffic, the transport used or the route chosen.

A Christmas route through Lisbon can continue from Parque Eduardo VII towards Marquês de Pombal and Avenida da Liberdade before descending to Restauradores and Rossio. From there, Rua Augusta leads towards Praça do Comércio and allows you to link several of the most representative spaces in the centre.
Illuminations are a regular part of the Christmas programme. Turismo de Lisboa documents luminous decorations on facades and streets, as well as Christmas trees distributed throughout different points of the city. As the programme changes each season, the installations from previous years are not presented as confirmed for 2026.
Baixa and Chiado are also two of the most interesting areas to combine markets and shopping. Avenida da Liberdade adds shop windows and international brand shops, while Alfama offers a very different atmosphere among narrow streets, squares and historical heritage.
Belém allows you to complete the trip with the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos and one of the best-known specialities of Lisbon, the pastéis de Belém. Although they are not an exclusively Christmas sweet, they are part of the city's confectionery tradition and their history is closely related to the surroundings of the monastery.
The specifically Christmas confectionery also deserves attention. Entering a pastry shop and finding bolo-rei, rabanadas, sonhos or coscorões allows you to get closer to some holidays that in Lisbon are experienced both in the streets and around the table.
In Lisbon, Christmas is also discovered in the small details: a bolo-rei shared in a pastry shop, shopping among the stalls of Rossio or a tram that appears at the end of a decorated street. December invites you to explore the city at a different pace, stopping in its squares, viewpoints and historical streets while the celebrations accompany the last weeks of the year. The markets mix with decorated shop windows, traditional cafés and corners that take on a different atmosphere during these dates. From the most elegant avenues to the cobbled streets of the historic centre, each walk offers a different way to approach local customs. Between Portuguese sweets, markets and traditions that return every December, Lisbon celebrates a Christmas with its own character.
