During Advent, Vienna turns monumental squares, historic old town streets and former imperial palaces into spaces dedicated to Christmas. Stalls appear in front of the City Hall, next to St. Stephen's Cathedral or in the courtyard of Schönbrunn, but they are also spread throughout the small streets of Spittelberg. Handicrafts, decorations, gastronomy and gift items form the core of markets that present significant differences in size, atmosphere and calendar.
Christmas markets in Vienna do not follow a single model either. Rathausplatz brings together one of the largest formats; Karlsplatz is especially linked to art and crafts; Spittelberg distributes its stalls among streets of Biedermeier buildings, while Schönbrunn uses the former residence of the Habsburgs as a setting.
For Christmas 2026, the dates for the main markets in the Austrian capital have already been published. The first of this selection will open on 6 November 2026 and some will continue after Christmas. Schönbrunn will run until 6 January 2027, while many traditional markets will end before Christmas Eve.

In Vienna, Christmas celebrations begin to become especially visible during the weeks of Advent. The markets occupy squares, parks and historic courtyards, while the commercial streets in the centre incorporate their seasonal lighting. One of the most recognisable examples is Graben, decorated with large luminaires inspired by chandeliers. Very close by, Annagasse uses motifs that represent the first notes of Silent Night.
Ice skating is also part of the programme for these weeks. Alongside the Wiener Christkindlmarkt, the Eistraum am Christkindlmarkt will have around 3,000 m² of ice in 2026 and routes through Rathauspark. It will open on 13 November and continue until 6 January 2027, although it will remain closed on 31 December. Rathausplatz also has a specific ice surface for children.
Schönbrunn incorporates another skating proposal within its market. In this case, it is a 15 x 30 metre artificial rink, open during market hours. Added to this are four rinks for playing Eisstockschießen, an activity similar to curling, as well as family attractions such as a Ferris wheel, train and carousel.
Music is another common element of these weeks. The Vienna Tourist Board includes classical Advent concerts, church concerts, gospel and other musical performances within the Viennese winter, so the markets can be combined with the city's cultural programme.
The way of exploring Vienna also changes. The stalls are integrated next to buildings such as the City Hall, St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Karlskirche or the palaces of Schönbrunn and Belvedere. Punsch, Glühwein, toasted almonds, sweets and other gastronomic specialities complete a celebration that extends over several weeks and is not concentrated solely on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
The first large markets in this selection will open on 6 November 2026. Both the Schönbrunn Palace Christmas market and the Stephansplatz Christmas village, located next to St. Stephen's Cathedral, will begin on that day.
On 13 November, some of the most relevant markets will be added: the Wiener Christkindlmarkt at Rathausplatz, Art Advent at Karlsplatz, Spittelberg, Am Hof and the Christmas village at the University of Vienna Campus. The Altwiener Christkindlmarkt at Freyung will start a day later, on 14 November.
On 20 November, Maria-Theresien-Platz and the Belvedere market will open. The Wintermarkt at Riesenradplatz, in the Prater, which is not part of the main selection of this article, will also begin on that day. From the second half of November, therefore, all the markets included in this selection will be in operation.

For this selection, the setting, handicrafts, gastronomy, tradition, variety of proposals and what makes each market different have been taken into account. Rathausplatz and Schönbrunn stand out for their scale and location; Karlsplatz, Spittelberg and Freyung give special prominence to handicrafts, while Stephansplatz, Campus and Maria-Theresien-Platz allow the markets to be incorporated into tours of different areas of Vienna.

The Wiener Christkindlmarkt is held in front of the Vienna City Hall and brings together stalls with Christmas gifts, tree decorations, handicrafts, sweets, gastronomic specialities and hot drinks in Rathausplatz. A large arch with candles marks the entrance to the venue.
The celebration continues in the neighbouring Rathauspark. The Eistraum am Christkindlmarkt is installed there, which in 2026 will have about 3,000 m² of ice and skating routes through the park. The official programme also includes a 12-metre-high carousel and a children's area with different Christmas activities.
The combination of market, park and ice rink means that Rathausplatz offers much more than just a walk between stalls. In addition, its location next to the Ring allows you to continue on foot to other points in the centre of Vienna.
🗓️ Dates: 13 November – 26 December 2026.
📍 Location: Rathausplatz, 1010 Vienna.
The courtyard of Schönbrunn Palace will host more than 90 stalls in 2026. The market combines traditional handicrafts, regional gastronomy and family activities in front of the former residence of the Habsburgs.
The official list of stalls shows a varied offer of crafts and gastronomy, with jewellery, wooden objects, felt figures and Christmas decorations alongside stalls with Knödel, sausages, Spätzle, Strudel, Punsch and Glühwein.
The family programme is especially well-developed. In 2026 there will be a 15 x 30 metre artificial skating rink, four rinks for Eisstockschießen, a Ferris wheel, carousel, train and creative activity spaces for children.
Schönbrunn also has one of the longest calendars in Vienna. The market continues after Christmas and remains open until Epiphany, although with different hours from 24 December.
🗓️ Dates: 6 November 2026 – 6 January 2027.
📍 Location: Ehrenhof of Schönbrunn Palace, 1130 Vienna.
The Art Advent at Karlsplatz focuses a good part of its proposal on art and handicrafts. In front of the Karlskirche, creators and craft stalls gather together with art installations, demonstration workshops and live musical performances.
Gastronomy is another of its best-defined characteristics. The Vienna Tourist Board points out that Art Advent is the only Advent market in Austria whose gastronomic offer is completely certified as organic.
The children's programme maintains the particular character of the market, with different proposals and attractions that operate using human power. For all these reasons, Karlsplatz differs from the large markets that base much of their appeal on the monumental setting or size.
🗓️ Dates: 13 November – 23 December 2026.
📍 Location: Karlsplatz, 1040 Vienna.
The Spittelberg market is spread out along Spittelberggasse, Stiftgasse, Schrankgasse and Gutenberggasse, small streets in a neighbourhood characterised by its Biedermeier architecture. Its layout is, therefore, very different from that of the markets installed in large squares.
The stalls give special importance to handicrafts and gastronomic gifts. The Vienna Tourist Board also highlights the presence of sustainable, local, organic and fair-trade products.
Walking through Spittelberg allows you to find the stalls integrated among the streets of the neighbourhood instead of concentrated in a single venue. Its location, very close to the MuseumsQuartier and Maria-Theresien-Platz, also allows you to combine several points of district VII and its surroundings during the same tour.
🗓️ Dates: 13 November – 23 December 2026.
📍 Location: Spittelberggasse, Stiftgasse, Schrankgasse and Gutenberggasse, 1070 Vienna.

The Altwiener Christkindlmarkt occupies Freyung, in the heart of Vienna, and presents a more intimate format than Rathausplatz or Schönbrunn.
Its offer is well defined by the Vienna Tourist Board: among the exhibitors are handicrafts, toys, jewellery, leather goods, textiles and candles. Gastronomy incorporates Lebkuchen, other Christmas specialities, organic products, Punsch and Glühwein.
Advent music is also part of the market's programme. Its location also allows you to continue walking towards Am Hof, located a short distance away, and link both visits within a tour of the historic centre.
🗓️ Dates: 14 November – 23 December 2026.
📍 Location: Freyung, 1010 Vienna.
The Stephansplatz Christmas village is installed next to St. Stephen's Cathedral, in the heart of the historic centre. The Vienna Tourist Board points out that its approximately 40 stalls offer products from Austria, local handicrafts, gift ideas and traditional specialities.
Its main difference compared to other markets is the location. The stalls are incorporated directly into one of the central points of any tour of Vienna, so it is easy to combine them with the pedestrian streets of the historic centre.
From Stephansplatz you can continue on foot to other markets in district I, including Am Hof and Freyung. In addition, it will be one of the first markets in this selection to open in 2026 and will remain in operation until 26 December.
🗓️ Dates: 6 November – 26 December 2026.
📍 Location: Stephansplatz, 1010 Vienna.
The K&K Weihnachtsmarkt Schloss Belvedere is held next to the Belvedere Palace, one of the great Baroque complexes in Vienna. Its location allows you to incorporate the market into a visit to the palace and its collections.
Unlike other markets in the selection, its calendar continues after Christmas. While Karlsplatz, Spittelberg, Freyung and Am Hof end on 23 December, the Belvedere remains open until 31 December 2026.
It is, therefore, one of the markets that can be visited during the last days of the year. On 24 and 31 December it has special opening hours.
🗓️ Dates: 20 November – 31 December 2026.
📍 Location: Schloss Belvedere, Prinz-Eugen-Straße 27, 1030 Vienna.
The Am Hof market is located in district I, a few minutes' walk from Freyung. The Vienna Tourist Board especially highlights the quality handicrafts of its stalls.
Gastronomy is also part of the proposal and has slightly longer hours: while the commercial market closes at 9pm, the gastronomic offer continues until 10pm.
The proximity between Am Hof, Freyung and Stephansplatz allows you to include all three markets within a walking tour of the centre. In terms of the calendar, Am Hof belongs to the group of markets linked to Advent and ends before Christmas Eve.
🗓️ Dates: 13 November – 23 December 2026.
📍 Location: Am Hof, 1010 Vienna.
The Weihnachtsdorf am Campus is held in the former General Hospital of Vienna, currently the University Campus. The Vienna Tourist Board identifies it as a meeting point especially popular among students and also highlights its offer for families.
The programme includes a children's train, a nostalgic-style carousel and two Eisstockschießen rinks. On weekends, children's activities are also held with magic, puppet theatre and Christmas workshops.
Its location in district IX allows you to extend the tour beyond the markets of the historic centre and get to know another area of the city during Advent.
🗓️ Dates: 13 November – 23 December 2026.
📍 Location: Alserstraße/Spitalgasse, Hof 1, 1090 Vienna.
The Maria-Theresien-Platz Christmas village is held in the square located between the Museum of Art History and the Museum of Natural History.
Its location makes it easy to combine the market with the two museums and other nearby points. The MuseumsQuartier is located next to the square and the streets of Spittelberg are also a short distance away, so both markets can be incorporated into the same tour.
Its calendar is different from that of Spittelberg: while the latter ends on 23 December, Maria-Theresien-Platz remains open during Christmas and ends on 26 December.
🗓️ Dates: 20 November – 26 December 2026.
📍 Location: Maria-Theresien-Platz, 1010 Vienna.

Food and hot drinks are part of the Vienna markets. Among the options that appear repeatedly are Punsch and Glühwein, as well as sweets, toasted almonds and other winter specialities. The Vienna Tourist Board expressly mentions the aroma of Punsch, biscuits and toasted almonds as part of the city's Christmas season.
The offer changes depending on the market. At Freyung, Lebkuchen, other Christmas specialities, organic products, Punsch and Glühwein are confirmed. Schönbrunn offers a much wider selection of catering: among the stalls announced for the season are Knödel, sausages, Spätzle, Strudel, meat products, Punsch and different versions of Glühwein. At Karlsplatz, the entire gastronomic offer of the Art Advent has organic certification.
There are also significant differences when it comes to shopping. Freyung brings together handicrafts, toys, jewellery, leather goods, textiles and candles. At Karlsplatz, the focus is on art and crafts and the programme includes demonstration workshops. Spittelberg combines craft stalls with sustainable, local, fair trade and organic products, as well as ideas for gastronomic gifts.
At Stephansplatz, the approximately 40 stalls focus on products from Austria, local handicrafts and gift ideas. Schönbrunn combines traditional crafts with an especially wide range of exhibitors, including jewellery, wooden models and objects, felt figures and Christmas decorations.
Therefore, it is worth choosing the market also based on what you want to buy. Karlsplatz and Freyung concentrate an offer especially linked to handicrafts; Spittelberg adds sustainable and local products; Stephansplatz focuses on Austrian products; and Schönbrunn brings together a wide selection of crafts and gastronomy in a single venue.

The markets in Vienna do not all end at the same time. Some are closely linked to the Advent period and close before Christmas Eve. Art Advent at Karlsplatz, Spittelberg, Freyung, Am Hof and the University Campus market will end on 23 December 2026.
Others continue during the holidays. The Wiener Christkindlmarkt at Rathausplatz, Stephansplatz and Maria-Theresien-Platz will remain open until 26 December, while the Belvedere market will extend its calendar until 31 December.
Those travelling after New Year's Day will still find markets open. The Schönbrunn Palace market and the Wintermarkt at Riesenradplatz, in the Prater, will be in operation until 6 January 2027.
Christmas markets are distributed throughout different areas of Vienna, so public transport allows you to combine the historic centre with Schönbrunn, the Belvedere, the Prater and other districts.
Within the Meliá portfolio is Meliá Vienna, located in the Donau-City area. For this section, it is advisable to keep only travel times specifically verified for each market and means of transport, as they may vary depending on the route used.
| Hotel | Nearby market | Distance/transport | Approximate time | Advantage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Meliá Vienna | Vienna markets | Public transport | Check according to market and route | Access to public transport to travel around the city |
The markets allow you to organise different routes through Vienna. A visit to the Belvedere can be combined with the market located next to the palace; Stephansplatz, Am Hof and Freyung can be linked on foot through the centre; and Maria-Theresien-Platz is close to the MuseumsQuartier and the streets of Spittelberg.
But the Viennese Advent continues outside the stalls. The Christmas lighting of the city centre streets, skating in Rathauspark and the programme of Advent and Christmas concerts are part of the city's winter season. Added to this are the markets installed next to some of its most recognisable buildings.
Vienna thus combines different traditions over several weeks: buying handicrafts, having a Punsch, skating in front of the City Hall or attending a concert are different ways of incorporating Christmas into your tour of the city. The palaces, churches and squares provide the setting, but it is the markets, the music and those customs typical of Advent that set the pace and atmosphere of Vienna during these dates.
