With the arrival of Advent, the squares and streets of Budapest incorporate one of the most characteristic traditions of the Central European winter: Christmas markets. Between craft stalls, Hungarian specialities and Christmas decorations, these markets appear both next to major monuments and in neighbourhoods and spaces less known to the visitor. Exploring them is also a way to discover different areas of the capital during the weeks leading up to Christmas.
The history of these markets, as we know them today, is relatively recent. The Budapest City Council has documented the annual celebration of the Vörösmarty tér market since 1998, created following the model of other European Christmas fairs, but giving prominence to Hungarian crafts and traditions. Over the years, new venues have been added, from St. Stephen's Basilica to Óbuda, Buda Castle or Városháza Park.
Hungarian Christmas also preserves its own customs and a calendar closely linked to Advent. This context helps to understand why the markets combine handmade objects, traditional dishes, hot drinks, lighting and family activities. For Christmas 2026, some dates have already been announced, while others still only have information from the previous season published.

Christmas in Budapest is closely linked to Advent, the four weeks of preparation that precede the holidays. During this period, markets appear, Advent wreaths are lit and winter gastronomy takes centre stage. One of the first notable dates is 6 December with Mikulás, the Hungarian tradition of Saint Nicholas, which is especially awaited by children.
There are also flavours that help to recognise these weeks. The bejgli, a sweet roll traditionally filled with walnuts or poppy seeds, is one of the Christmas classics in Hungarian homes. Added to this are the mézeskalács, gingerbread that can be found with elaborate decorations, and the kürtőskalács, whose rolled dough cooked on a cylinder is served hot and is common in the markets.
These traditions help us understand that the markets are part of a wider celebration. In Budapest, moreover, each area interprets Advent in a different way: from the large fairs in the centre of Pest to neighbourhood markets, small design spaces and family-friendly proposals.
Christmas markets in Budapest usually begin between mid and late November, although each one follows its own calendar. For 2026, the dates for several of the most important ones have yet to be announced, so it is not correct to automatically carry over those from the previous season.
Advent Bazilika and Vörösmarty Classic Xmas, for example, opened on 14 November in 2025, but their official pages continue to show that calendar and have not yet published the one for Christmas 2026.
Advent Óbudán 2026 is confirmed, which will begin on 27 November. The district council itself has announced the new edition and opened the call for applications for its craft and gastronomy stalls.
The Gozsdu Christmas Market has also been announced, which will be held daily from 4 to 23 December 2026.

Budapest allows you to choose between very different markets. For this selection, their location, tradition, presence of crafts and gastronomy, atmosphere, tourist interest and uniqueness have been taken into account. The large monumental markets are the best known, but it is worth setting aside time to discover smaller proposals if you have several days.

St. Stephen's Basilica Square offers one of the most recognisable settings for Christmas in Budapest. Advent Bazilika celebrated its 15th anniversary in 2025 and brought together nearly a hundred Hungarian artisans, as well as gastronomy, a Christmas tree, lighting and projections on the Basilica's façade.
The stalls allow you to look for ceramics, jewellery, design and other handmade products, as well as try winter specialities such as kürtőskalács. The offer changes between editions, so it is worth checking the 2026 exhibitors when the new programme is published.
Its location also makes it easy to integrate into any tour of Pest. At dusk, the lighting and projections on the Basilica make the surroundings one of the most attractive points to experience Christmas in the city.
🗓️ Dates: to be confirmed for 2026.
📍 Location: Szent István tér, 1051 Budapest.
Vörösmarty tér is closely linked to the recent history of Christmas markets in Budapest. Its fair was consolidated at the end of the 1990s and currently continues to combine Hungarian crafts and gastronomy in one of the most central squares in Pest.
Craftsmanship is one of its main selling points. The organisation selects creators of different specialities, and its list of exhibitors includes leatherwork, jewellery, illustration and other trades. The gastronomic side also carries considerable weight, with numerous Hungarian dishes and winter products.
Another of its attractions is its location. It is next to Váci utca and very close to the Danube, while Advent Bazilika, Deák tér and Városháza Park are at a distance that allows you to link several markets during the same walk.
🗓️ Dates: to be confirmed for 2026.
📍 Location: Vörösmarty tér, District V, Budapest.
The capital launched its official Christmas market in 2025 in Városháza Park and Deák Ferenc tér, organised around commercial stalls, gastronomy and winter programming. In that edition, the City Council expressly confirmed the presence of artisans, applied artists and merchants.
The offer included ceramics, Christmas decorations, handmade leather, jewellery, candles, posters and other products for gifts. On the gastronomic side, you could find mulled wine, kürtőskalács, lángos, sweets and seasonal dishes.
Its location is especially convenient for the traveller. Deák Ferenc tér is one of the main connection points for public transport in Budapest, and from here you can easily reach Vörösmarty tér, St. Stephen's Basilica and Erzsébet tér on foot.
🗓️ Dates: to be confirmed for 2026.
📍 Location: Városháza Park and Deák Ferenc tér, centre of Budapest.
The Buda side offers a completely different setting. In Szentháromság tér, next to Matthias Church and the Fisherman's Bastion, an Advent market has been held on a smaller scale than the large markets in Pest.
In the 2025-2026 season, it featured local artisans and stalls selling jewellery, ceramics, candles and seasonal products, accompanied by gastronomy and hot drinks. Activities linked to Advent were also scheduled.
The reason for including it in a route is not only commercial. Its position in the heart of the Castle District allows you to combine the market with some of the most important monuments in Buda and, at the end of the afternoon, with the views of the Parliament and the Danube from the Fisherman's Bastion.
🗓️ Dates: to be confirmed for 2026.
📍 Location: Szentháromság tér, District I, Budapest.

To experience a Christmas less focused on the main tourist circuits, it is worth travelling to Óbuda, north of Buda. Its Advent programme is centred on Fő tér and is organised by the district itself.
It is, moreover, one of the markets that already allows information for the new season to be provided. Advent Óbudán 2026 will begin on 27 November, and the City Council has confirmed both the celebration and the call for applications for craft and gastronomy merchants. Concerts during the weekends, family activities and an ice rink have also been announced.
The setting of Fő tér and the neighbourhood character distinguish it clearly from Advent Bazilika or Vörösmarty tér. It is especially interesting for those who are staying for several days in Budapest and want to get off the tourist axis of the centre.
🗓️ Dates: from 27 November 2026; end date pending official confirmation.
📍 Location: Fő tér and surroundings, District III, Óbuda-Békásmegyer.
Gozsdu Courtyard offers a more contemporary version of Christmas shopping. Its regular market specialises in crafts, design, vintage, retro and antiques, and during December it operates daily as the Gozsdu Christmas Market.
Compared to the large gastronomic stalls and traditional huts of other markets, the interest here is especially in finding different objects and gifts. It is also a good opportunity to meet small creators and browse through vintage products.
The setting is part of its personality. Gozsdu Udvar is a succession of courtyards and passages in District VII, in the heart of the Jewish Quarter, so it is easy to incorporate it into a route through this area of Budapest.
In this case, the dates for the Christmas season are published by the organisation.
🗓️ Dates: 4-23 December 2026.
📍 Location: Gozsdu Courtyard, between Király utca 13 and Dob utca 16, District VII.
Városliget approaches Christmas from an especially family-oriented perspective. Varázsliget takes place in the park, in the surroundings of Vajdahunyad, combining gastronomy and a festive atmosphere with activities designed for children.
Official information from previous seasons includes food, Christmas sweets and hot drinks, as well as craft workshops and family attractions. It is important to distinguish it from the traditional markets of Vörösmarty or the Basilica: Varázsliget functions as a broader Christmas proposal, in which the stalls are part of a set of leisure and activities.
The setting is one of its main attractions. Városliget allows you to combine the visit with Vajdahunyad Castle and other spaces in the park, so it can easily take up several hours of a day.
🗓️ Dates: to be confirmed for 2026.
📍 Location: Városliget, surroundings of Vajdahunyad, Budapest.
Secret Market is clearly different from the previous ones. It is not a traditional Christmas market, but a periodic fair dedicated to design and independent creators that will hold one of its editions in the middle of the Advent season.
The organisation presents it as a meeting point with Hungarian and international designers and focuses it especially on creativity, design objects and workshops. It may be interesting for those looking for contemporary gifts and who want to get away from the more traditional offer for a few hours.
The November 2026 edition is already officially announced for 29 November at Akvárium Klub. Its location in Erzsébet tér is also very practical, a short distance from the axis formed by Deák tér, Vörösmarty tér and the Basilica.
🗓️ Dates: 29 November 2026.
📍 Location: Akvárium Klub, Erzsébet tér 12, 1051 Budapest.
The markets in Budapest do not all end at the same time. Some are strictly linked to Advent and close before Christmas Eve, while the large markets in the centre usually continue through Christmas and can last until New Year's Day or the first few days of January.
For 2026, Gozsdu Christmas Market has already confirmed its last day as 23 December. On the other hand, the final closing dates for the large markets have yet to be published.
The previous season serves only as a reference to understand these differences: Advent Bazilika lasted until 1 January 2026; Vörösmarty remained active until New Year's Eve, although the artisans finished on 28 December; and the official Városháza Park market remained open until 10 January 2026.
Therefore, if you are travelling after 24 December, it is worth checking the specific calendar for each market before planning your route.

To visit the main markets, the centre of Pest is one of the most practical areas to stay. Advent Bazilika, Vörösmarty tér, Városháza Park, Deák tér, Erzsébet tér and Gozsdu are concentrated in this part of the city, while the markets in Buda and Óbuda require travelling to the other side of the Danube or towards the north.
Within the Meliá portfolio is Hotel President Budapest Affiliated by Meliá, located at Hold utca 3-5, in the centre of Pest. Its location is particularly suitable for getting to Advent Bazilika and then continuing on foot to other markets in District V.

Budapest thus offers many ways to approach Christmas: from the large markets in front of the Basilica and in Vörösmarty tér to the small stalls at Buda Castle, the neighbourhood atmosphere of Óbuda or the design proposals of Gozsdu and Erzsébet tér. Between one market and another are the Danube, the cafés, the architecture and some of the great monuments of the capital. A combination that makes these weeks a particularly interesting time to discover Budapest at a more leisurely pace and reserve part of the trip simply for strolling.
