Portugal celebrates Christmas with markets, illuminations, gastronomy and traditions that vary considerably from one region to another. Lisbon concentrates some of the most well-known urban proposals, while cities like Aveiro, Braga, Coimbra, Castelo Branco or Covilhã organise their own markets in squares and central spaces. In Madeira, the celebrations also take on a marked regional character.
The Christmas markets in Portugal combine crafts, gastronomy, sweets, decorations and gifts. Some follow the traditional model of stalls, while others are part of broader Christmas programmes that incorporate a real commercial market alongside cultural or family activities.
Exploring them also allows you to get closer to the Portuguese customs of this time of year. The Consoada, cod, the Bolo-Rei, rabanadas and filhoses coexist with nativity scenes, the Missa do Galo and traditions such as the Madeiro. From Lisbon to Madeira, each region contributes its own products and celebrations.

The Consoada is one of the central moments of Portuguese Christmas. Families gather on Christmas Eve around the table and fish traditionally plays a leading role, especially cod.
After dinner, the Catholic tradition is linked to the Missa do Galo, celebrated at midnight. The presépio, or nativity scene, also has a prominent presence in both churches and Portuguese homes.
Pastries occupy a good part of the table. The Bolo-Rei, with its characteristic crown shape, shares the spotlight with filhoses, sonhos, azevias and rabanadas, among other sweets associated with these holidays.
In different inland towns, the Madeiro de Natal is also maintained, a tradition based on a large community bonfire that brings neighbours together during Christmas. Turismo de Portugal documents this custom especially in areas between Trás-os-Montes and the Alentejo.
The festive cycle extends until Epiphany. During this last part of the celebrations, the Janeiras appear, traditional songs with which good omens are wished for the new year.
Portuguese Christmas markets begin to appear mainly during November and multiply as December approaches. There is no common date for the whole country and each municipality or organiser establishes their own calendar.
Lisbon is usually one of the cities with the greatest variety. Rossio, Wonderland Lisboa, Alfama and Campo Pequeno had markets or commercial stalls in their last documented edition. Aveiro, Braga, Castelo Branco, Coimbra, Covilhã and Setúbal also have markets supported by their respective city councils.
In Madeira, the Avenida Arriaga market is one of the centrepieces of Funchal's Christmas programme and is documented by the official Turismo de Madeira website.
The specific dates of previous editions serve to prove the existence of these markets, but they do not carry over to 2026. When the new calendar is not officially published, the date remains pending confirmation.

Wonderland Lisboa occupies the Eduardo VII Park and is one of the largest Christmas celebrations in the capital. Although it incorporates numerous attractions, Turismo de Lisboa expressly confirms that it also has a real craft and gastronomy market.
In the last documented edition there were dozens of stalls with traditional gastronomy and crafts. The offer included sweets, hot drinks and handmade gifts, as well as regional products, fashion and pastries.
Its location allows you to combine the event with a walk through Marquês de Pombal and Avenida da Liberdade. It is an option especially suitable for families and for those who prefer to concentrate shopping and entertainment in the same space.
The edition currently published by Turismo de Lisboa corresponds to the previous season and is not used to date the 2026 one.
🗓️ Dates: pending confirmation for 2026.
📍 Location: Eduardo VII Park, Lisbon.
The Rossio Christmas Market is set up in Praça Dom Pedro IV, in the heart of the Baixa. Turismo de Lisboa documents a market with wooden stalls dedicated to crafts and typical gastronomy, as well as other entertainment activities.
Its location is one of its main attractions. From Rossio you can continue walking towards Praça da Figueira, Rua Augusta, Chiado or Praça do Comércio, so it is easy to incorporate it into any tour of the historic centre.
It is an alternative more focused on stalls and shopping than Wonderland Lisboa, where the attractions have a considerably greater weight.
The published calendar corresponds to 2025 and is not presented as valid for the next edition.
🗓️ Dates: pending confirmation for 2026.
📍 Location: Praça Dom Pedro IV — Rossio, Lisbon.
Alfama also has its own market. Alfama, a Christmas Village is promoted by the Associaçao de Comerciantes do Bairro de Alfama in collaboration with the Junta de Freguesia de Santa Maria Maior and with the support of the Lisbon City Council.
Turismo de Lisboa confirms that the market offers local crafts and gastronomy. It is set up in Largo do Chafariz de Dentro, in front of the Museu do Fado, so it allows you to incorporate shopping into a walk through one of the most well-known historic neighbourhoods in the capital.
The initiative also has a direct relationship with local commerce: one of its stated objectives is to support the neighbourhood's merchants.
The documented edition corresponds to the previous season, so its continuity and exact calendar must be confirmed for 2026.
🗓️ Dates: pending confirmation for 2026.
📍 Location: Largo do Chafariz de Dentro, Alfama, Lisbon.
Campo Pequeno offers a proposal especially oriented towards shopping. Turismo de Lisboa documents this market as a Christmas fair with numerous stalls intended for finding gifts and different products.
Its format allows it to be distinguished from Wonderland Lisboa. Here the spotlight falls mainly on exhibitors, creativity and products for gifting, although the programme may incorporate workshops and other activities.
The market is held at Sagres Campo Pequeno, well connected by public transport and away from the concentration of markets in the Baixa, so it allows you to discover another area of Lisbon.
The available dates correspond to the 2025 edition and are not reused for the next season.
🗓️ Dates: pending confirmation for 2026.
📍 Location: Campo Pequeno, Lisbon.
The Christmas Club Aveiro is documented directly by the Câmara Municipal de Aveiro. In the previous edition it was installed in Largo do Mercado Manuel Firmino and the City Council itself describes it as a project inspired by the Christmas markets of northern Europe.
The space functions as a meeting point during the holidays and combines commercial activity with entertainment. Its central location makes it easy to incorporate into a walk around Aveiro.
It is also one of the two markets that the municipality expressly included in its previous Christmas programme, which reinforces its interest for a route focused on shopping and festive atmosphere.
The available documentation corresponds to the previous Christmas, so the 2026 calendar must be published again before considering it confirmed.
🗓️ Dates: pending confirmation for 2026.
📍 Location: Largo do Mercado Manuel Firmino, Aveiro.
Aveiro has a second municipal proposal: the Mercadinho de Natal installed in the Mercado do Peixe and integrated into the Oficina do Pai Natal.
The Câmara Municipal de Aveiro confirms that the market is energised by the municipality's freguesias and that crafts and flavours typical of the Christmas season can be found there.
Its surroundings also allow you to discover one of the most characteristic areas of the centre of Aveiro. It is a proposal of more contained dimensions than the major events in Lisbon and especially appropriate for those who want to combine gastronomy, shopping and urban walking.
The documented dates belong to the previous edition and do not carry over to 2026.
🗓️ Dates: pending confirmation for 2026.
📍 Location: Mercado do Peixe, Aveiro.
The Mercado de Natal de Braga is part of the Braga é Natal municipal programme and is set up on Avenida Central.
The Braga City Council expressly confirms that its purpose is to give visibility to artisans, artists, booksellers and local producers. The documented offer includes gastronomy and sweets, hot drinks, agri-food products, toys, books, textiles, illustrations, Christmas decorations and nativity scenes.
This variety makes it one of the Portuguese markets with a better-documented commercial composition. Its location also allows you to combine the stalls with a tour of the monumental centre of Braga.
The available calendar corresponds to 2025. Although the City Council presents it as a new edition of an already existing market, its dates do not carry over to the 2026 season.
🗓️ Dates: pending confirmation for 2026.
📍 Location: Avenida Central, Braga.

The Mercadinho de Natal de Castelo Branco is organised by the City Council itself and is part of the Natal em Castelo Branco programme.
In its last documented edition it had 59 exhibitors, divided between 34 artisans and 25 gastronomy stalls. The municipality confirms the presence of crafts, regional products, gift proposals and traditional flavours.
The stalls were distributed across different spaces in the centre, including Avenida Nuno Álvares and the surroundings of the City Council. The commercial component is, therefore, clearly accredited and it is not simply a programme of lighting and leisure.
The exhibitor data describes the previous edition; it is not assumed that they will be repeated in 2026.
🗓️ Dates: pending confirmation for 2026.
📍 Location: civic centre of Castelo Branco.
Coimbra has a Christmas Market in Praça do Comércio supported by the Câmara Municipal. Municipal documentation proves its continuity over different seasons and the presence of artisans and other exhibitors.
Its location in the Baixa allows you to combine the market with the shopping streets and the heritage of the historic centre. The Câmara de Coimbra itself has highlighted its role in boosting traditional commerce.
The municipal Christmas programme also incorporates concerts and entertainment in different spaces, but those activities are reviewed each season and are not automatically attributed to the 2026 edition.
The market is real and recurring; its next calendar, however, still needs specific confirmation.
🗓️ Dates: pending confirmation for 2026.
📍 Location: Praça do Comércio, Coimbra.
The Mercadinho de Natal da Covilhã is part of Natal com Arte, the official Christmas programme of the municipality.
The Câmara Municipal da Covilhã expressly confirms the opening of the market in Praça do Município next to the Aldeia Natal. The municipal programme also demonstrates that the market is part of a broader celebration with cultural and traditional activities.
Covilhã provides a different context to that of the large urban destinations: its location next to the Serra da Estrela allows you to combine the market with a getaway to the Portuguese interior during the winter.
The programme consulted corresponds to 2025. Its existence is accredited, but the dates and activities of the following edition must be officially published before considering them confirmed.
🗓️ Dates: pending confirmation for 2026.
📍 Location: Praça do Município, Covilhã.
Funchal concentrates one of the most characteristic Christmas celebrations in Portugal. The Mercadinho de Natal de Avenida Arriaga is documented directly by Turismo de Madeira, which identifies it as one of the centres of the island's Christmas festivities.
Regional products have a special prominence here. Official tourist information mentions fresh fruit, plants, Madeira wine, cane honey and derivatives, as well as regional gastronomy typical of these dates. The stalls are set up in the central area of Avenida Arriaga.
The market thus allows you to incorporate into the article a proposal clearly differentiated from the continental cities and closely related to the products of Madeira.
Although the market is recurring, the specific date of the 2026 edition remains pending until the publication of the corresponding calendar.
🗓️ Dates: pending confirmation for 2026.
📍 Location: Avenida Arriaga, Funchal, Madeira.
The Mercado de Natal de Setúbal is part of the Setúbal Natal municipal programme. In the last documented edition it was installed in the central area of Avenida Luísa Todi.
The City Council confirms that it brought together around thirty exhibitors with regional products, crafts, decoration, clothing, jewellery and gastronomic proposals.
The location allows you to combine shopping with a tour of the centre of Setúbal and get closer to other areas of the city. Its variety of products and the direct support of the municipality justify its presence among the main Portuguese markets in this guide.
The number of exhibitors and the calendar belong to 2025 and are not presented as data for the next edition.
🗓️ Dates: pending confirmation for 2026.
📍 Location: Avenida Luísa Todi, Setúbal.
São João da Madeira provides a different proposal. The City Council documents the celebration of a Mercado de Natal Veggie, integrated into VeggieFest Christmas and held at the Oliva Creative Factory.
It is not a general Christmas market, but a thematic proposal focused on products related to a vegetarian and sustainable lifestyle. The municipality confirms the presence of exhibitors of food, cosmetics, clothing and crafts, as well as organic and sustainable products also intended for Christmas shopping.
Its specialised character is precisely what differentiates it from the rest of the selection. It is included as a real commercial market, but without presenting it as the main traditional Christmas market of São João da Madeira.
The information available corresponds to a previous edition and does not yet confirm its celebration in 2026.
🗓️ Dates: pending confirmation for 2026.
📍 Location: Oliva Creative Factory, São João da Madeira.
Gastronomy is a fundamental part of the Portuguese Christmas, although it is worth differentiating the products available in the markets from the recipes that belong mainly to family tables.
The Consoada brings families together on Christmas Eve. Turismo de Portugal documents cod or other fish as a traditional part of this dinner and specifically mentions Bacalhau com Todos among Portuguese Christmas recipes.
The Bolo-Rei is one of the best-known sweets of these holidays. Alongside it appear rabanadas, similar to French toast, as well as filhoses, coscorões, sonhos and azevias.
The market offer changes according to the region. Braga documents agri-food products, chocolate, honey and nuts; Aveiro speaks of crafts and typical flavours; Castelo Branco brings together regional products and gastronomy; and Setúbal combines food with crafts and other commercial proposals.
Madeira deserves a specific mention. Turismo de Madeira confirms in its Christmas market products such as Madeira wine, cane honey and derivatives, fruit and regional gastronomy.
To buy, the options range from crafts and decoration to books, textiles, jewellery and regional products. The exact offer always depends on the exhibitors selected for each edition.

The closing of Portuguese markets depends on each location. Some end before Christmas and others continue during the last days of December or go into the new year.
Lisbon shows these differences well: in the previous season, Rossio ended before Wonderland and Alfama. In other cities, city councils establish their own calendars according to local programming.
The Portuguese festive season, in cultural terms, lasts until Epiphany and the Janeiras are part of that final stretch. However, this does not mean that all markets remain open until then.
For that reason, no closing date is assigned to 2026 based solely on the previous edition. The final calendar must be checked individually when each municipality or organiser publishes their new programme.
The presence of Meliá in Portugal allows you to expand the accommodation possibilities beyond Lisbon. For this guide, establishments geographically linked to several of the cities that have documented Christmas markets have been selected.
Exact kilometres or minutes are not indicated when a specific check of the route is not available. This avoids converting variable traffic or transport times into fixed data.

The markets are only one part of the Portuguese celebrations. The Missa do Galo maintains its place within the Catholic tradition and is celebrated at midnight, after the Consoada.
The presépios also have a prominent presence. They can be found in churches and homes and are part of the traditional manifestations of the Portuguese Christmas.
In the interior, the Madeiro de Natal shows a Christmas of a community nature. A large bonfire becomes a meeting point and Turismo de Portugal documents this custom in different locations from Trás-os-Montes to the Alentejo.
Madeira brings its own traditions. Turismo de Madeira highlights the Noite do Mercado in Funchal, during which thousands of people come to the Mercado dos Lavradores and the nearby streets to do their shopping before Christmas. Fruit, vegetables, flowers, sweets and traditional drinks are part of the atmosphere.
The table completes the journey. Cod, Bolo-Rei, rabanadas, filhoses and sonhos are part of festivities in which recipes change according to the region and the family.
Portugal thus allows for a Christmas route much wider than Lisbon and Porto. Aveiro offers two municipal markets; Braga focuses on artisans and producers; Coimbra takes its stalls to the Praça do Comércio; Castelo Branco and Covilhã bring Christmas to the interior; Setúbal adds regional products and Madeira contributes flavours typical of the Atlantic.
There are Christmases that are remembered for a specific square; in Portugal, each city adds a different light to the journey.
Between stalls, sweets and regional products, the trip changes flavour as it advances from the mainland to Madeira.
And when the last purchases give way to the Consoada, the nativity scenes and the Janeiras, the Portuguese Christmas continues around what best defines it: the table, the streets and the gathering.
