Few destinations allow you to combine so many styles of golf in such a relatively compact area. On the Costa del Sol, the landscape shifts between the Mediterranean and the nearby mountain ranges, and the courses take advantage of this geography in very different ways: fairways set amongst pine forests, fairways opening out towards the sea, complexes with multiple courses, and layouts linked to some of the great international competitions.
This guide proposes a specific selection of golf courses on the Costa del Sol designed to showcase this diversity. It does not aim to bring together every club in the destination, but rather to focus on five courses and complexes with characteristics distinct enough to organise several days of golf without repeating the same experience.

The Costa del Sol allows you to make golf part of your journey through the destination. In Benalmádena, Golf Torrequebrada combines proximity to the Mediterranean with terrain from which the inland mountains also emerge. A little further west, Mijas offers a different experience at Chaparral Golf Club, where the course makes its way through an extensive Mediterranean pine forest.
The offering changes again as you move towards the western sector. Between Marbella and Estepona, Villa Padierna Golf Club allows you to choose between three 18-hole courses, a particularly interesting feature for those who want to dedicate several days to golf without repeating a course. Further on, Casares is home to Finca Cortesin, a course closely linked to international golf after having hosted, among other tournaments, the 2023 Solheim Cup.
The route can be extended to Sotogrande, where the Real Club Valderrama is located. In this case, it is important to make a geographical clarification: the course belongs to the municipality of San Roque and, therefore, is in the province of Cádiz. Its inclusion responds to a broader tourist conception of the western end of the Costa del Golf and not to its administrative belonging to Málaga.
This distribution makes it especially important to choose your accommodation according to the planned courses. Meliá Costa del Sol, in Torremolinos, is a logical reference for days in Benalmádena and Mijas, while the Meliá establishments located in Marbella and Estepona allow for more comfortable travel planning towards the western part. The location is used solely as a criterion for accommodation and does not presuppose agreements, ownership, or green fee advantages between the hotels and the clubs.

Rather than establishing a ranking, this selection allows you to understand why golf on the Costa del Sol is so varied. Each course represents a different way of planning a day: playing between the sea and the mountains, venturing into a Mediterranean pine forest, choosing between several courses, discovering a venue for major championships, or facing a design where strategy determines almost every shot.
Golf Torrequebrada is located in Benalmádena Costa and represents the relationship between golf and landscape that characterises this part of the coast particularly well. Opened in 1976, the course was designed by José “Pepe” Gancedo and has 18 holes.
The terrain allows many tees to appear in elevated positions, offering a clear reading of the hole before teeing off. From there, fairways accompanied by palm trees, pines, and olive trees come into play, as well as large greens with marked breaks and a combination of bunkers and lakes that force you to control both direction and distance.
One of its greatest attractions is precisely that the landscape does not act as a simple backdrop. Views towards the Mediterranean and the mountains accompany different moments of the round, and the changes in perspective contribute to the holes not feeling repetitive.
The location also makes it easy to integrate into a stay by the sea. The course is located in Benalmádena and the official website places it about 20 minutes from Málaga airport, so it can fit well both at the beginning and at the end of a trip dedicated to golf.

A few kilometres to the west, Chaparral Golf Club proposes an evident change of scenery. Located in Mijas and near Fuengirola, its 18-hole course was designed by José Gancedo and is integrated into a wide Mediterranean pine forest environment. The Royal Spanish Golf Federation defines it as a Parkland Forest type course, a designation that helps to understand the prominence acquired by the trees and the very shape of the terrain.
Here, the landscape directly conditions the strategy. The vegetation defines numerous lines of play and forces you to carefully assess where to place the ball from the tee. The course takes advantage of the natural shapes of the terrain instead of seeking a succession of completely open fairways, so that precision can be just as important as distance.
Another of its characteristic features is the distribution of the holes. The course combines six par 3s, six par 4s, and six par 5s, an unusual configuration that introduces constant changes in distance and approach during the round.
From different points, perspectives of the Mediterranean also appear, creating a contrast between forest, mountain, and coast. That combination makes Chaparral a good choice for those looking for a course where the natural environment has a particularly visible weight during the game.

Villa Padierna Golf Club provides a completely different perspective thanks to its 54 holes distributed across three 18-hole courses: Flamingos, Alferini, and Tramores. The complex is located between Marbella and Estepona and allows you to adapt the day to the player's level, the time available, or the type of course sought.
Flamingos Golf offers a more classic profile course with a competitive trajectory. Alferini Golf presents a longer and more demanding course, heavily conditioned by the natural topography. Tramores Golf, on the other hand, is an 18-hole executive course, par 63 and 3,468 metres, designed for a faster round and especially appropriate for working on precision and the short game. The club itself indicates that Tramores does not apply handicap restrictions.
The possibility of moving from one course to another completely modifies the approach to a stay. It is not necessary to choose between precision, distance, or a shorter round before arriving at the destination: all three options coexist within the same complex.
The practice facilities and the academy complete this proposal and allow you to dedicate specific time to training. For this reason, Villa Padierna fits particularly well when the goal is not just to play a round, but to dedicate several days to golf and alternate experiences.

In Casares, Finca Cortesin Golf Club introduces a competitive component into this route. Its 18-hole, par 72 course was designed by Cabell B. Robinson and is integrated into a Mediterranean landscape of olive trees, undulating terrain, and wide perspectives towards the coast.
The fairways offer space, but that breadth should not be confused with a lack of difficulty. The bunkers are placed to influence the lines of play, and the position chosen from the tee largely determines the next shot. The result is a course where players of different levels can find different options to tackle each hole.
Its recent history has considerably reinforced the international profile of the course. Finca Cortesin hosted the Volvo World Match Play Championship in 2009, 2011, and 2012, and in 2023 it became the venue for the Solheim Cup, held for the first time in Spain.
The complex also features the Nicklaus Academy, where personalised teaching and technology applied to the analysis and improvement of the game are combined. This training dimension, added to the competitive experience of the course, means that Finca Cortesin has a clearly differentiated identity within the selection.

Real Club Valderrama allows you to take a tour of the Costa del Golf to its western end. The course is located in Sotogrande, within the municipality of San Roque and in the province of Cádiz, so it should not be presented as a Málaga course. Its inclusion only makes sense within a broader itinerary that extends the trip towards this area.
Designed by Robert Trent Jones, the course has 18 holes, par 71, and reaches 6,392 metres in one of its configurations. But the length explains only part of its difficulty. Trees, bunkers, and protected greens force you to think carefully about the position of each shot and make finding the right place on the fairway as important as gaining metres from the tee.
The facilities include a driving range, putting green, chipping greens, club rental, buggies, caddies, shop, clubhouse, and teaching services. This allows you to prepare in detail for a round on a course where strategy acquires a particularly important weight.
For those planning several days of golf in the western sector, Valderrama can work as the culmination of the tour. The additional travel from Málaga is worth taking into account when organising schedules and accommodation.

One of the advantages of planning golf as a tour is that it is not necessary to concentrate all your games around a single point. Dividing your stay into zones allows you to reduce travel and, at the same time, get to know courses with very different characteristics.
Benalmádena and Mijas can form a first block. Golf Torrequebrada and Chaparral Golf Club are close enough to dedicate a day to each and contrast two different landscapes: a course open towards the Mediterranean and the mountains versus another marked by the pine forest. For this part of the trip, Meliá Costa del Sol, located in Torremolinos, offers a seaside accommodation reference.
The second block can move towards Estepona and Casares. Villa Padierna allows you to choose between three courses and Finca Cortesin adds a championship course, so this area easily supports several days without the need to look for courses that are too far apart from each other.
Those who want to extend the itinerary can continue towards Sotogrande and San Roque to play at Valderrama. In that case, it is advisable to book a full day and take the travel time into account, especially if the accommodation remains in the province of Málaga.
This way of organising the trip allows each stage to have its own personality. Instead of accumulating similar courses, the itinerary advances from courses close to the Mediterranean towards more technical proposals, complexes with several courses, and venues linked to competitive golf.

The geographical breadth of the destination makes it advisable to organise the zones first and the tee times afterwards. Grouping nearby courses avoids unnecessary travel and allows you to dedicate more time to the game, as well as to training or resting after your round.
Advance booking is especially important at courses with higher demand and during the most attractive seasons for playing. Spring and autumn usually offer particularly comfortable temperatures, while in summer, the early hours of the day help to avoid the hottest times.
Before each game, it is advisable to check the current conditions directly with the club. Handicap limits, dress codes, buggy availability, equipment rental, and maintenance work can change. Tramores, for example, explicitly states that it does not apply handicap restrictions, but that circumstance should not be extrapolated to the rest of the courses in the complex or to other clubs.
It is also useful to decide in advance whether you will be travelling with your own equipment. Several of these clubs have club rentals and other facilities for visitors, which can simplify a trip where golf is combined with other plans.
The real advantage of playing golf on the Costa del Sol is being able to change scenery without changing your destination. In a few days, it is possible to go from tees opening out towards the Mediterranean to fairways surrounded by pine forests, alternate between several courses within the same complex, or play on courses linked to major international championships. Organising your stay as a small tour allows you to make better use of that diversity and choose each day based on what you really want to find on the course: landscape, strategy, training, or a different sporting challenge.
