The country became independent from Portugal in 1975, but its colonial past is still very apparent in Maputo. Maputo Fortress, built by the Portuguese, houses a small museum where you can learn more about the city's past. The Mesquita da Baixa is the oldest and largest mosque in Mozambique. It’s very near the Central Market, a place that you should not miss if you plan to visit Maputo. You must try the peanuts! Feima Feria is a handicrafts fair which is a great place to learn about local crafts. The Museum of Natural History is home to a large collection of insects. The beautiful Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception is located in the Plaza de la Independencia.
