Crete has an aroma of olive trees, raki and salt water. The colours of the islands are dominated by the blue of the waters and a clear sky in which the sun is almost ever-present. The island is home to the most important remains of the ancient Minoan civilization. To learn more, you really have to visit the Minoan Palace of Knossos, Phaistos and Gortyna. The western part of the island has the best facilities for tourism, while the south and east are home to quieter beaches and small fishing villages where just watching people going about their daily lives is bewitching. The centre is a place where huge mountains rise up, including Levká Ori, popularly known as the white mountains.
