The Meliá is an imposing resort with 600+ rooms and one of the most spectacular salt-water pools in the world. Measuring over 200m, the pool and the well-tended gardens are this hotel's calling card. As a resort, the architecture is well distributed and there are plenty of loungers for guests to enjoy the swimming pools and gardens. Being a volcanic island, be prepared for the craggy terrain, the incredible variety of cacti and the black sandy beaches just beyond the perimeter of the hotel. The check-in process was a nightmare. A large bus had arrived before us and it took us 1:40 minutes to reach the counter only to discover that as Melià card holders we could have checked in at a different counter. There was not enough staff at the check-in counters and the process was painstakingly long. As a hotel of this capacity, surely the arrival of a tour bus should not faze your personnel. Handing out free cans of water is not a solution and one of the ladies on duty was quite frankly rude. Following check-in we were informed that the room we had booked was not available and were being offered an upgrade. Warning: if the upgrade involves a Bali bed in a garden, visit it first before you commit. We were taken to a first floor room that was dark and damp. There was a Bali bed in the garden but positioned close to a fence overlooking a car park. Luckily, we were able to change room and were reassigned a third floor room with a partial ocean view. The decor has aged and is slightly tatty but the room was spacious with an outdoor terrace overlooking the pools and the sea in the distance. As a hotel that warns its guests not to drink the tap water, we were surprised that water was not provided free of charge. Another issue the hotel needs to address is access to its restaurants. Claiming they were at 91% capacity, it was surprising to see how many of the restaurants were closed. Getting a table is another labyrinthine quest and depends entirely on the amount of nights you are staying. The last thing you want after a long flight is to be refused entry into the only restaurant operating that evening and have to hunt for a local restaurant. However, there is one restaurant - the Agave - that accepts guests on a first come, first serve basis - but is only open at lunchtime. It's worth mentioning that there is a separate area for Red Level guests that we didn't think was worth the extra money. Trying to decipher what the Red Level entails as far as services and restaurant reservations is a demanding task and after many phone calls to the hotel to ascertain what was included, we gave up. On a positive note, barring a few ladies at reception and patrolling the restaurants, the staff and attention were excellent. The breakfast buffet is splendid and if you get there before 9:30, you can avoid the queue. Photos: 1- queue for breakfast 2- salt-water pool 3- ground floor with bali bed and car park 4- video
