As evening falls and the lights begin to twinkle, Düsseldorf transforms into a city to explore at a leisurely pace. The cold air, the wooden stalls, the scent of spices and sweets, and the bustle of the streets create an atmosphere that can turn a simple stroll into one of your favourite Christmas memories. What's more, there is something especially beautiful here: each area of the city offers a different scene.
The Christmas markets in Düsseldorf are spread across different points in the city centre, from the Town Hall and the Old Town to Königsallee, Kö-Bogen and the Rhine promenade. This layout allows you to link several markets in a single day and discover different atmospheres within the same Christmas. A suggestion that is also part of the route through the Christmas markets in Europe.

The main Christmas markets in Düsseldorf will begin on 19 November 2026. From that moment on, the different areas of the centre will gradually fill with stalls and lights in Altstadt, Königsallee, Schadowstraße, Schadowplatz, Kö-Bogen and the Rhine promenade.
There is a small peculiarity in the calendar: on 22 November, Totensonntag (Sunday of the Dead), the markets will remain closed. They will reopen as normal the following day.
The start of the season coincides with that of other major Christmas markets in Germany, although here you can visit several settings in a single day without having to travel far.
One of the peculiarities of Düsseldorf is that its markets remain open until 30 December 2026, so you will still find a Christmas atmosphere after Christmas Eve.
On 24 December they will open from 11am to 3pm, they will remain closed on 25 December and will reopen on the 26th, from 2pm to 9pm. Afterwards, they will continue until 30 December.
This allows you to organise a getaway during the Christmas holidays and still find markets open when many other German cities have already finished their programme.

Opposite the Rathaus, in Marktplatz, the Handwerker-Markt brings together stalls dedicated especially to crafts. It is one of those places where you want to look at things calmly: handmade objects, Christmas decorations and small gifts, as well as demonstrations of some trades.
It also has offerings designed for children, such as activities and a carousel, making it easy to turn the visit into a family stop within the tour of the centre.

The Altstadt-Markt extends along Flinger Straße, in the heart of the Old Town. Its stalls are designed to integrate with the historical environment and accompany the walk between Marktplatz and Heinrich-Heine-Allee.
Its location makes it very easy to include it in a route through the centre. You can arrive from the Handwerker-Markt, continue afterwards towards Königsallee or Kö-Bogen and thus discover different Christmas atmospheres while you explore Düsseldorf on foot.
🗓️ Dates: from 19 November to 30 December 2026.
📍 Location: Flinger Straße, Altstadt, Düsseldorf.
The Kö-Bogen-Markt changes its setting completely. The stalls are located next to the city's municipal theatre, the Dreischeibenhaus and Kö-Bogen II, so that contemporary architecture becomes part of the Christmas landscape.
It is also one of the markets with offerings specifically designed for families, with a small stage where concerts, puppet theatre and other activities are scheduled.

Among shops, shop windows and Christmas lights, the Schadow-Markt brings a more urban atmosphere to Düsseldorf's Christmas route. Its stalls are spread along Schadowstraße, one of the main shopping areas in the centre.
It is a perfect stop to combine Christmas shopping with a stroll through the markets. From here you can continue towards Kö-Bogen, Königsallee or the Old Town and continue discovering the city on foot.
🗓️ Dates: from 19 November to 30 December 2026.
📍 Location: Schadowstraße, Düsseldorf.
On the banks of the Rhine, Roncalli’s Weihnachtspromenade offers a different atmosphere. Its small glass structures resemble greenhouses and allow you to maintain views towards the river while you browse the stalls.
Gastronomy has a special prominence here, with offerings different from those usual in other markets and spaces where you can take shelter from the cold. It is a good place to end the tour of the Altstadt and then head to the Rhine promenade.
🗓️ Dates: from 19 November to 30 December 2026.
📍 Location: Rheinufer, between Burgplatz and Alter Hafen, Düsseldorf.

One of the lovely things about Christmas in Düsseldorf is that you don't need to go from one market to another following a closed route. You can start in Marktplatz, continue through the streets of the Old Town, head towards Königsallee and finish by the Rhine once the lights have been turned on.
Along the way, other small details appear that are also part of these dates: decorated shop windows, illuminated trees, the reflection of the lights on the water or an impromptu stop to buy a sweet. If you are travelling with children, letting them choose where to stop can make the walk part of the adventure.
And there is a tradition that is worth trying: popping into one of the Büdchen, the small kiosks so characteristic of Düsseldorf, to have something hot and discover another facet of the city far from the large shopping areas.

The markets are mainly concentrated in the centre, and Heinrich-Heine-Allee is one of the most practical points for accessing the different areas. Düsseldorf Tourismus recommends using public transport during these dates, as parking in the centre can be limited.

Staying in Düsseldorf also allows the journey itself to be part of the trip: a morning among shops and markets, an afternoon by the Rhine and, when the lights start to come on, returning to the centre to end the day among Christmas stalls and stands.
