In Hamburg, searching for a Christmas market can take you to very different parts of the city. One afternoon you can start in front of the City Hall, continue to the harbour and finish amidst the lights of St. Pauli. Another day you can head to a Scandinavian market, discover the streets of Ottensen or leave the centre to visit Bergedorf.
This variety is one of the great attractions of the Christmas markets in Hamburg. There are traditional options, family-friendly markets, events linked to Nordic communities and spaces that reflect the city's more alternative character. All of them are part of a Christmas that invites you to explore Hamburg in a different way and fits perfectly into a route through the Christmas markets in Europe.

The first lights and stalls start to appear in Hamburg before December arrives. Santa Pauli will open on 9 November 2026, followed by the Scandinavian markets, which will celebrate their first days from 13 to 15 November. Then HafenCity will join on 16 November, and Bergedorf on 20 November.
From 23 November, some of the best-known markets will be added, such as the Historischer Weihnachtsmarkt at the Rathausmarkt and the Ottensen market. From that moment on, the city brings together a large part of its offerings and it is easier to combine different neighbourhoods and atmospheres during the trip.
The calendar allows you to discover a very diverse Christmas: German tradition in front of the City Hall, Nordic influences, harbour atmosphere and markets with the unique personality of each neighbourhood. A diversity that you will also find when exploring the Christmas markets in Germany.
Most traditional markets say goodbye just before Christmas Eve. The Historischer Weihnachtsmarkt at the Rathausmarkt, Santa Pauli and Ottensen will remain open until 23 December 2026, concentrating much of their activity during the weeks of Advent.
Christmas continues for a few more days in other parts of the city. Bergedorf and HafenCity will remain open until 30 December, while the Harburg market will remain until 28 December.
If the trip is planned for after Christmas Eve, these dates allow you to continue finding a Christmas atmosphere in Hamburg during the last days of the year, although it will be necessary to choose markets with a longer calendar.
From the historic centre to the more distant neighbourhoods, Hamburg's markets offer very different atmospheres. The Rathausmarkt brings together tradition in front of the City Hall, Santa Pauli brings the more alternative character of St. Pauli and the Scandinavian markets bring the customs of Finland, Norway, Denmark and Sweden. In Ottensen, Bergedorf and HafenCity, Christmas changes the scene once again.

Wooden stalls, lights and the great façade of the Hamburger Rathaus create the setting for the Historischer Weihnachtsmarkt, one of Hamburg's most traditional markets. The venue recreates a small Christmas village and brings together stalls of handicrafts, regional products, gifts and gastronomic offerings, with special attention to fair trade and sustainability.
One of the most curious moments comes when the flying Weihnachtsmann crosses the market in his sleigh. Among the stalls you will also find roasted almonds, sweets and the organic Glühwein made especially for this event. From here it is easy to continue the walk through the centre and connect with other markets and shopping streets.
🗓️ Dates: from 23 November to 23 December 2026.
📍 Location: Rathausmarkt, Hamburg.
Christmas lights, music and the atmosphere of Reeperbahn meet in Santa Pauli, a market different from the more traditional offerings of Hamburg. In Spielbudenplatz, the gift and gastronomy stalls coexist with a programme of live music and shows designed for an adult audience.
Among its most curious offerings is the Glühweinapotheke, where you can personalise the mulled wine with different spices. You will also find the Winterdeck, a space to have hot drinks and rest, with that casual touch that characterises the neighbourhood.
🗓️ Dates: from 9 November to 23 December 2026.
📍 Location: Spielbudenplatz, St. Pauli, Hamburg.
Finland, Norway, Denmark and Sweden bring their own Christmas traditions to Hamburg through the Skandinavische Weihnachtsmärkte. The bazaars, organised by the sailors' churches, bring together products and flavours from these four countries for a few weekends on Ditmar-Koel-Straße, very close to the harbour.
Gastronomy plays a leading role here, along with handicrafts, textiles and Christmas decorations. These are small markets concentrated on specific dates, an opportunity to discover customs from Northern Europe and find gifts or products different from those usually found in German markets.
🗓️ Dates: 13-15 and 20-22 November 2026.
📍 Location: Ditmar-Koel-Straße 2-6, Hamburg.
The Weihnachtsmarkt in Ottensen extends from Altona station and the Mercado shopping centre to Spritzenplatz, occupying a good part of the streets of this lively Hamburg neighbourhood. Its more than 40 stalls bring together handicrafts, gifts and gastronomic offerings from different places, while Christmas decorations accompany the whole route.
It is also a market especially designed to be enjoyed as a family. There is a carousel and the traditional Sunday puppet theatre, although the full programme of activities for 2026 is not yet finalised. The visit allows you to discover Ottensen from a different perspective and combine the Christmas walk with the daily atmosphere of the neighbourhood.
🗓️ Dates: from 23 November to 23 December 2026.
📍 Location: from Bahnhof Altona and Mercado to Spritzenplatz, Ottensen.
It seems that Bergedorf is transformed for a few days into a small winter village. The Bergedorfer Weihnachtsmarkt is set up around the castle and recreates a Nordic-inspired scene, with wooden stalls, Christmas decorations and moments of artificial snow during the day.
When evening falls, the bonfires and lights make the surroundings of the Bergedorfer Schloss even more charming. Getting away to this neighbourhood allows you to discover a different side of Hamburg and combine the market with a walk through its historic streets.
🗓️ Dates: from 20 November to 30 December 2026.
📍 Location: surroundings of the Bergedorfer Schloss, Hamburg.
Contemporary buildings, Christmas lights and the atmosphere of the old harbour mix on the Überseeboulevard during the weeks of Advent. Among the stalls you will find gastronomy and hot drinks, in a market that fits especially well with the modern landscape of HafenCity.
For families, one of its attractions is Wintergolf, a thirteen-hole course decorated with Christmas motifs. There is also a covered area to take shelter from the cold, a practical detail when the Hamburg winter invites you to take a break during the walk.
🗓️ Dates: from 16 November to 30 December 2026.
📍 Location: Überseeboulevard, HafenCity, Hamburg.
A Christmas getaway to Hamburg offers much more than just visiting markets. Between one visit and another, you can discover some of the places that explain the city's personality and take advantage of the trip to see what to see in Hamburg beyond the lights and stalls.
Combining these places with the markets allows you to discover Hamburg from different perspectives: the historic city, the harbour, the more alternative neighbourhoods and the contemporary architecture. And in December, the lights and the Christmas atmosphere make even the walks between one place and another have a special charm.
The INNSiDE by Meliá Hamburg Hafen is located in a central area next to a canal and near the Mehr! Theater, so it can serve as a base to combine the centre, HafenCity and the harbour area.
