The Christmas season in Munich begins in the second half of November, just like in most of Germany's Christmas markets. The Münchner Christkindlmarkt in Marienplatz will open on 20 November 2026, a date that will also mark the start of other city offerings, such as the medieval market at Wittelsbacher Platz and Pink Christmas.
During the following days, other venues will be added: the Tollwood Winterfestival will begin on 24 November and the Märchenbazar at the Olympiapark will open on 26 November.
Therefore, from the last week of November it is already possible to organise a getaway with several different markets. Munich's calendar allows you to move in just a few days from the tradition of Marienplatz to a medieval market, an alternative offering or a winter festival.
Most traditional Christmas markets concentrate their activity until the days leading up to Christmas Eve. Pink Christmas will end on 20 December, while the medieval market at Wittelsbacher Platz and Tollwood will finish on 23 December. The Christkindlmarkt in Marienplatz will remain open until 24 December, although it will have reduced opening hours on that day.
Christmas continues for a few more days in other spaces. The Märchenbazar will remain open until 28 December 2026, while some winter offerings extend their programme even further.
If your trip coincides with the last days of the year, it is worth choosing the market you want to visit carefully, as the calendar changes significantly from one to another.

Munich brings together very different markets within the same city. Marienplatz represents the most recognisable tradition, Wittelsbacher Platz recreates a medieval Christmas and Tollwood mixes crafts, international gastronomy and culture. Pink Christmas and the Märchenbazar, for their part, provide two completely different atmospheres.

In front of the Neues Rathaus, the Christkindlmarkt brings together a good part of Munich's Christmas traditions. Its stalls occupy Marienplatz and Rindermarkt and offer decorations, crafts, gifts and gastronomic specialities. In 2026 it will have 137 stalls and a programme that includes Advent music, the traditional Krampuslauf and the Himmelswerkstatt for children.
One of its most special corners is the Kripperlmarkt, dedicated to nativity scenes and their figures. In addition, its location allows you to continue your walk through the historic centre and approach places such as St. Peter's Church or the shopping streets of Munich.

In Wittelsbacher Platz, Christmas changes era. The medieval market recreates a historic celebration with merchants dressed in period costumes, ancient crafts and craft stalls. The gastronomy follows the same theme, with specialities prepared over wood fires, such as Flammbrot, as well as sausages and spiced hot drinks.
Its location, right in the centre, allows you to combine your visit with a walk through Odeonsplatz, Maxvorstadt or the Englischer Garten. It is a different offering to the traditional atmosphere of Marienplatz and a good way to discover another side of Munich's Christmas.
🗓️ Dates: from 20 November to 23 December 2026.
📍 Location: Wittelsbacher Platz, Brienner Straße 6-10, Munich.
The large Tollwood tents occupy the Theresienwiese during the winter and bring together the Markt der Ideen, with crafts, products from different parts of the world and a wide range of gastronomic options. Ceramics, jewellery, clothing and handmade items share space with international dishes made with organic products.
The festival also adds concerts, theatre, circus and activities for children, so the visit goes far beyond shopping. It is a different way to discover Christmas in Munich in a more multicultural environment and enjoy the Theresienwiese from a different perspective.

The pink lights of Stephansplatz announce the arrival of Pink Christmas, a market that was born linked to the LGBTIQ+ community and which today welcomes all types of public. The stalls bring together gifts, crafts and gastronomy, while the small stage hosts music and drag shows.
Its location in Glockenbachviertel allows you to combine your visit with a walk through one of the neighbourhoods with the most personality in Munich and then continue towards Sendlinger Tor or the historic centre. Due to its size and atmosphere, it is a different stop on the city's Christmas route.
🗓️ Dates: from 20 November to 20 December 2026.
📍 Location: Stephansplatz, Munich.
It looks like it's out of a fairy tale, but the Märchenbazar is set up every winter in the Olympiapark with its circus-inspired tents and nostalgic décor. The stalls bring together clothing, jewellery, woodwork and other handcrafted objects, along with Bavarian and international gastronomy.
Music, shows and children's activities, such as puppets, workshops and stories, complete the offering. In addition, its calendar extends beyond Christmas Eve, so it can fit especially well during the Christmas holidays.
🗓️ Dates: from 26 November to 28 December 2026.

Munich has enough places to fill a getaway even when the stalls are closed. Between markets, you can take the opportunity to explore the historic centre, visit its palaces or discover some of the spaces that give the city such a distinct personality.
Combining these places with the markets means that your trip does not depend solely on Christmas opening hours. You can spend the morning discovering Munich, head to a market afterwards and reserve the afternoon to see how the lights begin to transform the city's squares.

The main markets are spread between the historic centre, Theresienwiese and the Olympiapark. Public transport allows you to connect these areas with ease, so your accommodation can serve as a starting point for organising different routes during your stay.

A stay in Munich allows you to plan each day in a different way: spend a morning in the historic centre, then head to a market and finish by discovering some of the neighbourhoods that lie outside the most well-known routes. In this way, Christmas becomes another way to get to know the city.
The first lights begin to twinkle in Marienplatz as the centre of Munich prepares for Advent. The wooden stalls, the grand tree in front of the Town Hall and the sound of Christmas music create one of those scenes that seem made for wandering aimlessly, browsing the stalls and finding a little gift to take home.
But Munich's Christmas goes far beyond its most famous market. There are spaces that recreate a medieval village, internationally inspired offerings, alternative markets and corners designed especially for families. The Christmas markets in Munich thus offer different ways to discover the city during this season and are part of the route through the Christmas markets in Europe.
