Things to do in Holbox

Although the island of Holbox does not have great historical monuments or imposing pre-Hispanic archaeological zones in its territory, it offers a large number of experiences related to nature, the sea and tranquillity. From relaxing on practically virgin beaches to sailing through mangroves or contemplating flamingos and pelicans in the wild, the island invites you to enjoy the environment without haste.

The activities in Holbox are very varied and adapt to all types of travellers. You can explore the island by bicycle or golf cart, practice paddle surfing, go on excursions to spot whale sharks during the appropriate season or discover some of the most spectacular natural corners of northern Quintana Roo.

Thanks to its small size, you will be able to see most of the places to visit in Holbox easily in one or two days, although, if you want, you can extend your stay to enjoy the quiet atmosphere that characterises the island.

 

Punta Mosquito

Among all the places to see in Holbox, Punta Mosquito is one of the most outstanding. This spectacular sandbank with shallow waters allows you to walk several hundred metres out to sea while enjoying impressive views of the Caribbean.

In addition, it is one of the best places to observe flamingos during certain times of the year. Its completely natural landscape makes it one of the most representative images of the island.

 

Punta Cocos

Located at the opposite end of the island, Punta Cocos is famous for its spectacular sunsets and for being one of the best places to contemplate the phenomenon of bioluminescence when conditions are favourable.

During the day, Punta Cocos is a perfect beach for rest and meditation, characterised by its calm waters with almost no waves, its iconic hammocks and wooden swings installed directly over the sea. It is the ideal corner if you want to lose track of time reading a book or enjoying the soft Caribbean breeze.

 

Holbox Centre

The urban centre of Holbox is the social, cultural and commercial heart of the island. Its sandy streets, colourful houses, craft shops and restaurants create a very pleasant atmosphere for walking both during the day and at sunset.

One of the main attractions of the centre of Holbox is the impressive collection of murals painted by local and international artists strategically distributed across dozens of facades, walls and public buildings. These works of urban art transform the sandy streets into an authentic permanent open-air art gallery that invites you to be photographed at every step.

 

Playa Holbox

The main beach on the island, which extends parallel to the town and the main hotel area, offers several kilometres of fine white sand and crystal-clear waters that stand out for their shallow depth and the almost total absence of dangerous currents, making it a gigantic natural saltwater swimming pool.

Along its shore, small and integrated beach clubs, bars with reggae or bossa nova music and completely public areas are interspersed. Its quiet atmosphere and easy access on foot make it one of the best places in Holbox to disconnect from daily stress and enjoy the sunsets of the Mexican Caribbean.

 

Punta Mosquito Beach

In addition to being one of the main ecotourism and landscape attractions of Holbox, Punta Mosquito beach is one of the most spectacular, natural and photogenic on the island.

Due to its location away from the town centre and its environmental protection, it completely lacks sun loungers, umbrellas or hotels, offering the traveller a practically virgin environment where the only sound is the whisper of the wind and the gentle breaking of small waves on the white sandbank.

 

Punta Cocos Beach

In addition to its famous sunset and its nocturnal magic, Punta Cocos beach stands out with its own light during the day for the profound tranquillity and silence it offers visitors, even during the months considered to be the high tourist season.

Its shallow waters, the natural shade provided by some palm trees and the lower concentration of people make it considered one of the best beaches for experiencing total isolation.

 

Yum Balam Flora and Fauna Protection Area

A large part of the territory of Isla Holbox is part of the Yum Balam Flora and Fauna Protection Area, an immense protected natural space that covers more than 154,000 hectares and guards an extraordinary biodiversity of ecosystems in the Mexican southeast, including wetlands, low jungle, coastal lagoons and dense mangrove forests.

Through a guided boat excursion you will be able to observe colonies of pink flamingos, white and brown pelicans, elegant herons, crocodiles and even elusive manatees up close, making the reserve a true pilgrimage paradise for lovers of ecotourism, marine biology and nature photography.

 

Isla Pájaros

This tiny, forested and protected island, located within the Yalahau lagoon, is one of the best, most important and respected sanctuaries for bird watching in the wild in the entire Yucatán Peninsula. Isla Pájaros serves as a nesting and seasonal resting area for dozens of bird species, including frigatebirds, cormorants, pelicans, flamingos and roseate spoonbills.

 

Isla Pasión

Very close to the south coast of Holbox is Isla Pasión, an idyllic and tiny uninhabited islet of white sand, completely surrounded by turquoise and shallow waters. It is a corner that evokes the classic image of a desert island.

Isla Pasión is visited regularly and almost obligatorily during the popular "Three Points" boat excursions organised daily by the local fishing cooperatives of Holbox.

 

Yalahau

Yalahau is an impressive and crystal-clear natural freshwater spring that emerges with force in the middle of a dense coastal mangrove on the mainland, being another of the most famous and recommended day trips from Holbox.

Whale shark sighting

Between the months of June and September each year, the open waters near Holbox become the ideal setting to observe the whale shark (Rhincodon typus) during its season of presence in the area. It is one of the most impressive and memorable experiences that can be enjoyed in Mexico, as it allows you to contemplate the largest fish in the world in its natural habitat.

 

Bioluminescence

During certain nights of the year, the shallow and dark waters of Holbox are transformed into a fantasy setting thanks to the natural phenomenon of bioluminescence.

This effect is produced by the presence of phytoplankton microorganisms, mainly dinoflagellates, which, when agitated by the movement of the water, emit small flashes of bluish light.

This unique natural process turns a simple night swim in the sea or the simple act of moving your hands underwater into a magical, unforgettable and almost unreal visual experience that seems to have been taken from a science fiction film.

 

Kayak or paddle surf trip

The calm, flat and shallow waters that surround a large part of the island's coast allow you to explore its coastlines by sea kayak or paddle surf, maintaining direct contact with the marine landscape.

In addition, the coexistence between fishermen, artists and travellers has helped to create a personality of its own that differentiates the island from other tourist destinations in the Mexican Caribbean.

 

Isla Holbox is an ideal, safe and stimulating holiday destination to enjoy a family trip. The island's beaches, characterised by their extremely calm waters, with almost no waves and very shallow depth, offer a comfortable environment for young children to swim, play in the sand and explore with greater peace of mind.

In addition, as it is an island with a very quiet pace of life and where you do not have to worry about motor vehicle traffic, the environment is especially comfortable, safe and relaxed for walking or cycling with the little ones.

 

If you have a weekend on the island, I have prepared a two-day itinerary in Holbox to help you better organise your visit and make the most of your stay:

• Day 1: explore the centre, relax on Playa Holbox, visit Punta Mosquito and spend time watching the sunset at Punta Cocos.
• Day 2: take an excursion through Yum Balam with a stop at Isla Pájaros, Isla Pasión and Yalahau or, during the appropriate season, take part in a trip to swim with the whale shark.

And, if you are only going to be there for a few hours and are looking for what to see in Holbox in 1 day, my advice would be to explore the centre of the island, enjoy Playa Holbox, walk to Punta Mosquito and end the day watching the sunset at Punta Cocos.

 

Before finishing, I am going to tell you how to get to Holbox so that you can go to the island in the most comfortable and fastest way.

The first thing will be to travel by road to the small and picturesque port of Chiquilá, located at the northern tip of the state of Quintana Roo. Chiquilá can be easily reached by rental car, private taxis or using the regular tourist bus routes that depart daily from the urban centres and airports of Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum or the colonial city of Mérida.

Once at the port of Chiquilá, head to the main pier, from where passenger ferries depart approximately every half hour. These boats make the comfortable maritime journey between Chiquilá and Isla Holbox in just 20 or 25 minutes.

My advice is to combine the beaches in Holbox with an excursion through the nature reserve, explore the island by bicycle and try some of its small restaurants. Precisely that tranquillity, combined with the beauty of its landscapes, makes Isla Holbox one of the most special destinations in Mexico.
