Porto experiences Christmas amidst the illuminations of the Baixa, the great tree in Avenida dos Aliados, the shop windows of traditional businesses, and various markets scattered throughout the centre. Cordoaria hosts the largest Christmas event, while Batalha, São Bento, Carlos Alberto, and Ribeira bring together crafts, small creators, and local products.
The Christmas markets in Porto also have the advantage of being close to some of the city's main points of interest. It is possible to link several of them on foot while exploring Clérigos, São Bento, Santa Catarina, or the Douro riverside.
In addition to the markets, there is Portuguese gastronomy, Port wine, traditional sweets, and streets illuminated during the festivities. Knowing when each market opens, where it is located, and what it offers allows you to organise different routes and make the most of a Christmas getaway to the city.

A large part of Porto's Christmas celebration is concentrated in the centre. In the last official programme available, corresponding to 2025, Avenida dos Aliados hosted the large Christmas tree and the main concerts, while Cordoaria brought together a market, activities, and entertainment. The City Council illuminated 94 streets in collaboration with the Associação dos Comerciantes do Porto.
Markets play an important role, but there is no single venue. The 2025 municipal fair and market programme distributed proposals between Cordoaria, Batalha, Avenida D. Afonso Henriques, Carlos Alberto, Parada Leitão, and Ribeira. Some are specifically Christmas-themed, while others are urban markets that extend their activity during December.
Food is another of the great elements of these dates. Visit Porto documents the presence on Christmas tables of cod, rabanadas, leite creme, aletria, pão de ló, and bolo-rei, as well as nuts and Port wine. Traditional businesses in the Baixa remain one of the places to buy many of these products.
Christmas markets in Porto usually begin between the last days of November and the beginning of December, although each one follows its own calendar. The last complete municipal programme available allows these differences to be appreciated: in 2025, the Cordoaria Christmas Market began on 29 November, while Mercado da Alegria — Natal also opened that weekend.
Other urban markets were incorporated even earlier. The municipal programme placed the Christmas activity of the Mercadinho Privado da Ribeira and Mercado do Sol from 27 November, while Mercado Artes & Ofícios — Natal and other craft markets were incorporated from the end of November.
These dates correspond exclusively to 2025 and serve to understand how the calendar is usually distributed. At the time of checking this guide, the Porto City Council and Ágora have not yet published an equivalent programme for Christmas 2026, so no previous date is presented as confirmed for the new season.

The selection prioritises markets that add interest to a tourist visit due to their Christmas character, location, crafts, variety of products, or setting. A distinction is made between markets created specifically for Christmas and urban markets that the City Council itself incorporates into its December commercial programme.

The Cordoaria Christmas Market is the main specifically Christmas reference in Porto. It is set up in the Jardim de João Chagas, next to the Clérigos Tower, and is part of the Christmas programme organised by Ágora — Cultura e Desporto do Porto.
The official documentation for its 2025 edition allows you to get to know its offer well. The organisation included stalls for Christmas decorations, nativity scenes, crafts, toys, jewellery, books, and regional products. The gastronomic part included traditional sweets, chocolates, cured meats, cheeses, wines, nuts, and other specialities, as well as catering stalls with hot drinks and prepared food.
Its surroundings help to differentiate it from other markets. Cordoaria is next to Clérigos and very close to the streets of the Baixa, so it is easy to continue on foot towards Livraria Lello, Praça de Carlos Alberto, or Aliados.
In 2025, it was open from 29 November to 30 December, but that calendar does not extrapolate to the next edition.

📍 Location: Jardim de João Chagas — Cordoaria, Porto.
The Mercado da Alegria — Natal occupies Praça da Batalha and is one of the main alternatives for buying crafts and gifts in the heart of the centre. It is a Christmas edition of Mercado da Alegria, an initiative linked to small artisans and merchants.
The editions documented by the City Council have brought together crafts, goldsmithing and costume jewellery, handmade toys, clothing, accessories, and regional gastronomic products. In 2025, it was expressly included in the municipal Christmas market programme, between the end of November and the end of December.
Its position is one of its main strengths. Praça da Batalha is located next to the church of Santo Ildefonso and very close to Rua de Santa Catarina. São Bento is also a few minutes' walk away, so the market can easily be incorporated into any tour of the Baixa.
The 2025 programme took place from 29 November to 28 December, with different opening times depending on the day of the week.

📍 Location: Praça da Batalha, Porto.
Avenida D. Afonso Henriques, between the surroundings of São Bento and the Sé, has hosted another of the proposals specifically linked to Christmas: Mercado Artes & Ofícios — Natal.
The market is mainly oriented towards trades and artisanal creation. Municipal documentation from previous editions includes products such as ceramics, textiles, decorative objects, and toys made by small artisans, while the official 2025 programme included the market again within the city's Christmas fairs.
Its location is especially practical for the visitor. Avenida D. Afonso Henriques connects the surroundings of the São Bento station with the Cathedral area, so it allows you to introduce Christmas shopping into a monumental route without moving to another neighbourhood.
In the 2025 municipal programme, it was active until 28 December, with closure on the 25th. The specific dates for the next edition have not yet been announced.
🗓️ Dates: pending confirmation for 2026.
📍 Location: Avenida D. Afonso Henriques, Porto.
Mercado Porto Belo is not a market created exclusively for Christmas, but an urban market held in Praça de Carlos Alberto. However, the City Council integrates it into its Christmas commercial programme and extends its days during December.
Its profile is different from that of Cordoaria or Batalha. It is especially linked to paper, music, and organic products, as well as projects and objects developed by its participants. In municipal tourist programmes, vinyl records, vintage items, and works by new creators also appear.
This makes it an interesting alternative for looking for gifts that move away from conventional Christmas decoration. Praça de Carlos Alberto is also located next to the Cedofeita axis and a short distance from Clérigos and Carmelitas.
In December 2025, the City Council scheduled Mercado Porto Belo for the 6th, 13th, 20th, 22nd, 23rd, and 27th. That calendar is not considered valid for 2026 until there is a new official publication.

Mercado do Sol is another of the urban markets that acquires special interest during December. Its specialisation is clearly defined by the City Council: it brings together artisanal objects with traditional or contemporary characteristics.
It usually carries out part of its activity in Praça de Parada Leitão, the space located next to the Universidade do Porto and popularly known by many visitors as Praça dos Leões. This location allows it to be combined with Clérigos, the churches of do Carmo and dos Carmelitas, and Praça de Carlos Alberto.
The commercial history of the area also has a curious connection with these dates. Municipal documentation recalls that a honey fair used to be held near here, on Rua do Dr. Ferreira da Silva, during the Christmas season.
In 2025, the official Christmas programme included activity for Mercado do Sol between 27 November and 31 December.
🗓️ Dates: pending confirmation for 2026.
📍 Location habitual: Praça de Parada Leitão, Porto.
The Mercadinho Privado da Ribeira allows you to incorporate shopping into one of Porto's most characteristic walks. The City Council includes it among its urban markets and, during the last published Christmas campaign, it had activity on the Cais da Ribeira during practically all of December.
Its appeal for a traveller lies above all in the setting. Unlike the markets located in the interior squares of the Baixa, this one is located next to the Douro, in an area from which you can see Vila Nova de Gaia and a short distance from the Dom Luís I bridge.
Municipal documentation on the Ribeira markets links this type of urban fair with the maintenance of the traditional character of street vending and the animation of the city.
In 2025, the Mercadinho Privado da Ribeira was officially included in the City Council's Christmas programme from 27 November to 31 December.
🗓️ Dates: pending confirmation for 2026.
📍 Location: Cais da Ribeira, Porto.
The Mercado de Artesanato da Batalha shares an area with Mercado da Alegria — Natal, but they are different proposals. The former is a stable craft market that continues to be held during December and which the City Council includes in its Christmas season market programme.
Its specialisation is handmade products. Municipal tourist documentation mentions objects such as bags, belts, and costume jewellery and establishes the artisanal character of the items sold.
The interest for the visitor also lies in the possibility of finding two types of market in the Batalha area during the holidays: the specifically Christmas-themed Mercado da Alegria and this craft fair. From the square, it is easy to continue towards Santa Catarina, São Bento, or the Sé.
In the 2025 municipal programme, it appeared with activity from Monday to Saturday, but there is no specific calendar published for the 2026 season yet.
🗓️ Dates: pending confirmation for 2026.
📍 Location: Praça da Batalha, Porto.
Gastronomy deserves a chapter of its own because an important part of Christmas in Porto takes place around the table. Between savoury dishes, sweets, and wine, there are several specialities closely related to these dates.
Cod is one of the essential products. Visit Porto expressly includes it among the ingredients of the Christmas dinner, and traditional shops in the Baixa sell it alongside nuts, spices, preserves, wines, and other products common to the celebrations.
Among the sweets, the bolo-rei stands out, easily recognisable by its crown shape and a dough enriched with candied fruits and nuts. Added to this are rabanadas, related to Spanish torrijas; aletria, prepared with thin noodles; pão de ló; and leite creme. All of these appear among the Christmas sweets recorded by Porto Tourism.
The supplementary sources consulted also mention filhoses, which can be made with pumpkin, as well as meat dishes present in Portuguese celebrations, such as kid, lamb, or suckling pig.
Port wine also has a prominent place during these dates. Its different styles offer very different profiles: from young and fruity wines to aged versions with notes of nuts and spices. It is also one of the most representative products that can be included in gastronomic shopping during a trip to the city.
To buy food products, not everything happens inside the markets. Visit Porto suggests exploring the traditional commerce located between Rua Formosa, Rua Fernandes Tomás, and Rua do Bonjardim. In this area, there are historic establishments where you can look for cod, nuts, spices, preserves, wines, sweets, and other ingredients.
As for gifts, it is advisable to choose the market according to the type of purchase. Cordoaria offers an especially Christmas selection; Mercado da Alegria focuses on artisans and small merchants; Artes & Ofícios focuses on artisanal production; Porto Belo is more appropriate for design, paper, music, and different objects, and Mercado do Sol combines traditional and contemporary inspired crafts.
Market activity does not disappear immediately after Christmas Eve. The 2025 official calendar shows that a significant part of the proposals continued during the last week of December, although each market had its own dates.
Mercado da Alegria — Natal and Mercado Artes & Ofícios — Natal lasted until 28 December, while the Cordoaria Christmas Market remained open until the 30th. Mercado Porto Belo held a final day on 27 December. Mercado do Sol and Mercadinho Privado da Ribeira continued until 31 December.
The general Christmas programme of the city was even more extensive: Ágora set the 2025-2026 season between 29 November and 3 January. This does not mean, however, that all markets were open until that last date.
For 2026, there is no equivalent official calendar yet. Travellers who want to visit Porto between Christmas and New Year should especially check which markets remain active after 25 December when the new programme is published.
Meliá Hotels International does not currently have an establishment in the city of Porto. The company option that can be used as a reference in the north of Portugal is Meliá Braga Hotel & Spa, located in Braga, on Avenida General Carrilho da Silva Pinto.
| Hotel | Nearby market | Distance/transport | Approximate time | Advantage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Meliá Braga Hotel & Spa | Markets in the centre of Porto | Braga–Porto Campanhã train + urban transport in Porto | From 39 min on the Alfa Pendular or around 1 h 06 min on the urban train between Braga and Porto Campanhã, depending on the service | Allows you to combine Braga and Porto in a trip through the north of Portugal |
Meliá Braga Hotel & Spa is located in Braga, so it should not be considered as accommodation from which to walk to the Christmas markets in Porto. Its interest lies in the possibility of combining both cities within the same itinerary through the north of Portugal.
The establishment's information points out rail connections between Braga and Porto Campanhã and records times of approximately 39 minutes on the Alfa Pendular and 1 hour and 6 minutes on the urban train, depending on the service. These times correspond to the rail journey between both cities and do not include the travel from the hotel to the Braga station or from Campanhã to the markets in the centre of Porto.
Once in Porto, Cordoaria, Batalha, Carlos Alberto, and other markets in the Baixa can be combined within the same tour of the centre. For those who are going to dedicate most of the trip exclusively to Christmas in Porto, staying in Porto is geographically more practical; Meliá Braga Hotel & Spa is especially meaningful within a route that also includes Braga.

Avenida dos Aliados acts as one of the main stages for Christmas in Porto. In 2025, it hosted the large tree in front of the City Hall and the official start of the lighting, as well as concerts. That year, 94 streets were decorated, so the lights extended through numerous points in the centre.
A Christmas route can start at Aliados and descend to São Bento. From there, Batalha is a short distance away and allows you to continue towards Rua de Santa Catarina and Bolhão. In the opposite direction, Clérigos leads to Cordoaria, while Praça de Carlos Alberto and Parada Leitão concentrate several urban markets.
The Ribeira provides a very different landscape. The walk along the Douro, the Dom Luís I bridge, and the views towards Vila Nova de Gaia allow for the incorporation of the Mercadinho da Ribeira into a route that does not revolve exclusively around shopping. It should be remembered that Gaia is another municipality: its activities and markets should not be presented as markets in the city of Porto.
The Mercado do Bolhão also deserves a stop, although it should not be confused with a Christmas market. Its interest during these dates lies in gastronomy and shopping. The traditional commerce in its surroundings allows you to look for ingredients for Christmas dinner, from cod and nuts to spices, preserves, and wine.
Bakeries are another part of the route. Bolo-rei, rabanadas, aletria, and pão de ló allow you to get closer to traditions that do not depend on a specific event or opening date. In December, they appear linked to family gatherings and Christmas tables.
And wine offers the possibility of extending the route to the other side of the river. The wineries historically associated with Port wine are located in Vila Nova de Gaia, not in Porto, an important geographical distinction. Crossing the Dom Luís I bridge allows you to combine both cities without confusing their respective municipalities.
In Porto, Christmas is especially suitable for organising walking tours. Cordoaria can be linked with Clérigos and Carlos Alberto; Batalha with São Bento, Santa Catarina, and Bolhão; and Ribeira with the Douro and the Dom Luís I bridge. Between one market and another, there are traditional grocers, bakeries, illuminated streets, and shops where Christmas shopping continues to be part of the city's daily life. Rather than concentrating on a single venue, the Porto proposal is thus distributed across different squares and neighbourhoods in the centre, with crafts, gastronomy, and local commerce as the main common threads.
