If you are planning a trip to the Mexican Caribbean, you are surely wondering which beaches to visit in Cancún. And it is no wonder, as it is one of the most iconic sun and beach destinations on the planet.
Before preparing your own top list of beaches in Cancún, keep in mind that the Hotel Zone is home to kilometres and kilometres of white sand and turquoise water, but not all beaches offer the same, by any means. Knowing the differences well will save you more than one unnecessary trip. I say this from experience.
In this guide to beaches in Cancún I will tell you, beach by beach, what you will find at each one, how to get there and which type of traveller they suit best.

Unwinding without the crowds |
One of the quintessential quiet beaches in Cancún, with fewer crowds. |
The order of this list is based primarily on criteria of accessibility, type of waves and level of crowds, to make it easier for you to choose according to what you are looking for on each beach day.
I'll start with Playa Delfines, which for me is one of the most beautiful beaches in Cancún. Located in an elevated area of the Hotel Zone, it offers a wide panoramic view of the Caribbean Sea and is one of the best-known spots in the city for contemplating the landscape.
Here you will find the famous "Cancún" sign, one of the most photographed places in the city and a regular stop for those visiting Cancún. Furthermore, as it is a public beach, it offers a different environment to other sections of the Hotel Zone dominated by large tourist complexes. Access to public beaches in Cancún is free.
The waves are usually a bit rougher than in other areas, so pay attention to the safety flag before entering the water.
The best of Playa Delfines
What stands out most about this beach is the combination of a viewpoint, free entry and wave conditions that, depending on the day, can be more suitable for practising activities such as bodyboarding or surfing. In any case, it is always advisable to check the safety flag before entering the water, as sea conditions can change.
Location: Hotel Zone, southern end.
An interesting option if you are travelling with your family or if you simply feel like taking a swim, Playa Tortugas stands out for its waters, which are usually calm, although conditions can vary depending on the state of the sea and the wind.
It is also one of the regular departure points for ferries to Isla Mujeres, so you will see plenty of people coming and going, although that does not detract from the beach's charm.
Next to the sand you will find establishments where you can eat or have a drink, making it easy to combine time on the beach with other services without going too far away.
It is one of the most complete options if you want to spend the whole day without moving around too much.
The best of Playa Tortugas
Its strong point is the calm water combined with the proximity of all kinds of services, which places it among the most recommended quiet beaches in Cancún for families with children.
Location: Hotel Zone, northern section.
If you are into surfing, or simply want to try your luck with a board for the first time, Chac Mool can be a good option in Cancún. The waves can be more intense at certain times and, as with the rest of the beaches in the destination, conditions depend on the wind and the state of the sea.
Do not expect championship waves like in other parts of the country, but the conditions can allow for water activities when the state of the sea permits. If you want to get started in surfing, it is advisable to check the available offer and the conditions for that day in advance. To swim, always check the safety flag before entering the water.
Its location makes it very accessible whether you are staying in the north or south of the hotel strip.
The best of Playa Chac Mool
The best thing, without a doubt, is that it is one of the few beaches for surfing in Cancún with a real offer of classes and instructors, something that is not usually available on the rest of the coast.
Location: Hotel Zone, central section.

Very close to the Forum by the Sea shopping centre, Playa Langosta offers a much quieter atmosphere than its central location would suggest. Its small bay protects it from the waves, so the water is usually calm almost all year round.
It is a common departure point for excursions and catamarans, but the sand itself maintains a relaxed pace, perfect for those who prefer to alternate time on the beach with a stroll through the shops or a meal nearby.
Its small size makes it easy to explore in a short visit.
The best of Playa Langosta
It stands out for combining tranquillity and proximity to commercial and leisure offerings, making it a perfect stop if your plan combines beach and shopping in the same afternoon.
Location: Hotel Zone, northern section.
If what you want is to get into the water with a mask and snorkel, Playa Caracol can be an interesting option due to its location and its waters, although visibility and conditions for snorkelling can vary depending on the state of the sea.
It is somewhat hidden between hotel areas, so it usually has fewer crowds than neighbouring beaches like Marlin or Langosta. This is a big plus if you are looking for a moment of calm without giving up the comfort of being right in the tourist corridor.
It is a very helpful stop for a mid-morning break during a route through the Hotel Zone.
The best of Playa Caracol
What is most appreciated here is the combination of crystal clear waters and few people, something that is not always easy to find in such a busy area.
Location: Hotel Zone, central-northern section.
Synonymous with activity and movement, Playa Marlin is home to a large number of water sports companies in Cancún: parasailing, jet skiing, banana boat and other plans designed to have a great time in the sea.
It has a very lively atmosphere all day long, with background music and plenty of tourists entering and leaving the water. Although it is not the beach I would choose for a nap, it is a great choice if you are travelling with friends or as a couple and you feel like adding some fun and adrenaline to the trip.
Its location also makes it a good reference point for finding your way around the hotel strip.
The best of Playa Marlin
Its main draw is the wide variety of water activities concentrated in the same stretch of sand, ideal if your plan involves combining beach and adrenaline in the same afternoon.
Location: Hotel Zone, central section.
This list would not be complete without Playa Ballenas, an interesting option if you are looking for a quieter atmosphere within the Hotel Zone. The crowds can vary depending on the time of year and the time of day, but its surroundings allow you to enjoy the beach while staying away from some of the most crowded areas.
As it is surrounded by hotel complexes, the stretch of public beach offers a different environment to other more commercial areas of the Hotel Zone. Regarding sargassum, its presence can vary considerably depending on weather conditions and currents, so it is not advisable to guarantee that this beach is free of algae when other areas have them.
A good choice if you have already visited beaches with more atmosphere and you feel like finishing with something calmer.
The best of Playa Ballenas
What is most valued is precisely the sense of space and tranquillity, something difficult to find in the middle of August in the rest of the hotel strip.
Location: Hotel Zone, northern section.

So that you can easily locate each of these beaches and plan your trips, consult the following map with the location of the coastal points of interest in Cancún.
If you force me to choose just one, I would go for Playa Delfines, which brings together exactly what most people are looking for: a postcard landscape, free access and that little bit of swell that makes it a bit more entertaining.
Reasons to choose Playa Delfines as the best beach in Cancún:
Alternative:
If you prefer something more sheltered and with fewer people, Playa Ballenas is what you are looking for. And if you have a free day and feel like leaving the city, an excursion to Isla Mujeres or Puerto Morelos will treat you to even calmer and more transparent waters.
