MADRID, A TRAVEL GUIDE BY OUTLIERS FOR THE MELIÁ COLLECTION

What makes Madrid unique?

This was the question I asked everyone we met during our days in Madrid as we photographed (with Cecilia Renard) and curated this guide. In a time when cities are increasingly becoming alike, I believe it’s essential to appreciate what makes each place truly distinctive. Historically, Madrid has welcomed people from every corner of Spain and, today, from all over the world. We were eager to see the city’s uniqueness through the eyes of those who walk its streets every day. The warmth of the people, the expansive sky, the pleasant weather, the bustling bars with their always-crowded terraces—regardless of the day of the week—the delicious food, and the lively yet cozy atmosphere that feels like a village despite being a capital city were just some of the answers we received.

Explore Madrid

Madrid is a great city to discover on foot. You can stroll along the wide avenues or wander through the narrow streets to explore the various neighborhoods.

Las Letras

A historic neighborhood that was home to important writers of Spain’s Golden Age. Filled with charming restaurants, shops and cafes.

La Latina

Famous for its vibrant atmosphere and tapas. The narrow, winding streets are perfect for exploring, especially during the weekends when the area comes alive with people enjoying food and drinks.

Chueca / Salesas

Known for its inclusive and vibrant atmosphere, Chueca is the epicenter of Madrid’s LGBTQ+ community. This neighborhood boasts a youthful energy and is full of design stores, trendy bars and restaurants.

Lavapiés

A multicultural neighborhood with a rich historical heritage. Lavapiés is famous for its cultural and artistic diversity.

Chamberí

A residential neighborhood that has maintained its traditional charm. Chamberí is known for its quiet squares and classic architecture.

Malasaña

A young and bohemian neighborhood, famous for its alternative and cultural vibe.

Salamanca

An elegant and exclusive neighborhood known for its luxury boutiques and wide avenues.

El Retiro

It is like a little world within Madrid. Its central location makes it a convenient retreat for locals to enjoy a peaceful escape from their daily lives. In addition to its beautiful green spaces, El Retiro features other elements, such as the Palacio de Velázquez and the Palacio de Cristal, where art exhibitions are showcased, as well as the iconic pond, old greenhouses, emblematic statues, and a library, among others. It is not only a place for relaxation and recreation but also an integral part of Madrid’s cultural landscape, offering a unique blend of nature, art, and history.

Cuesta de Moyano

Emblematic outdoor book market that leads you to one of the entrances of El Retiro. It reflects Madrid’s rich connection to literature, attracting authors, intellectuals and book lovers.

Biblioteca de las Escuelas Pías

An old 18th-century church transformed into a stunning library. The blend of historic architecture with a modern interior creates a unique atmosphere for studying or simply admiring. Be sure to check the visiting hours before you go. (La Latina)

Mercado Anton Martín

A lively market where tradition meets modernity. You’ll find fresh products as well as a variety of food stalls offering local and international cuisine, making it a perfect spot to grab a bite. A true reflection of Madrid’s vibrant culinary scene. (Las Letras)

Edificio Torres Blancas

An iconic building in Madrid, this architectural gem from the 1960s stands out for its futuristic design and unique cylindrical shapes. Designed by Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oiza, it’s a residential building not open for public tours but it’s worth admiring from the outside. (Salamanca)

Cine Doré

One of Madrid’s most iconic cinemas, built in 1912. It serves as the headquarters of the Spanish Film Archive, where they screen films of historical and cultural significance. (Las Letras)

Tramo

Madrid’s most beautiful and innovative restaurant. Proyectos Conscientes, the parent company of Tramo and Mo de Movimiento, seeks to create a positive impact on people and the environment. They source raw ingredients from local producers, the space has been built by reusing existing materials, energy and water are efficiently managed, and they employ people at risk of social exclusion. All of this is done without compromising the beauty of the place, the great service, or the delicious food. (Chamartín)

Farah

Eastern Mediterranean restaurant led by the amazing Heba Kharouf, a Palestinian-Syrian woman who cooks her family’s recipes. We loved everything we ate, from the fish to the spectacular dessert. The place is both stylish and warm. (La Latina)

Hermanas Arce

We love it for breakfast but it’s also a great option for a deliciously healthy lunch. The place couldn’t be more charming. (Salesas)

Acid

Great coffee and pastries. The three locations are nice, but Acid Bakehouse is the best if you want to take your time. (Las Letras & Salesas)

Bar Cock

Iconic 100-year-old cocktail bar, renowned for its elegant and classic atmosphere, as well as its rich history. The bar was founded during a vibrant period in Madrid’s cultural scene. It quickly became a popular gathering spot for the city’s intellectuals, artists, and celebrities. Let Javier suggest what to order. (Chueca)

Art in Madrid

From iconic museums to intimate galleries, Madrid is celebrated for its vibrant and diverse art scene.

Paseo del Arte

One of the city’s most important cultural areas, Paseo del Arte hosts three of the most prestigious museums in Europe, along with the elegant park “El Retiro,” where both locals and tourists can take a break from the concrete.

Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza

It boasts an extensive collection that bridges the gap between the classical masterpieces of the Prado and the modern art in the Reina Sofía. It features iconic artists from various eras, such as Van Gogh, Monet, and Matisse.

Museo del Prado

It features a vast collection of European art from the 12th to the 20th century, renowned for Spanish masterpieces like Velázquez’s “Las Meninas” and Bosch’s “The Garden of Earthly Delights.” Go early to avoid queues.

Museo Reina Sofía

The museum features modern and contemporary art primarily by Spanish artists. Admiring the monumental “Guernica” by Picasso is an unmissable experience, as are the works by Dalí and Miró.

Casa Josephine

An interior design studio and furniture shop, their pieces are unique and timeless. They also own two houses for rent in Segovia and La Rioja that are worth a look. (La Latina)

Olavide Bar de Libros

Bookstore right next to Plaza Olavide, a charming square known for its vibrant atmosphere. (Chamberí)

Espadrille shop and leather shoe store, respectively, with over 150 years of history. They are located next to each other in the heart of Madrid. (Madrid de los Asturias)

Its narrow cobblestone streets are lined with quaint cafés, bars, boutique stores and traditional taverns, creating an ambience an atmosphere full of character, attracting locals and tourists alike.

The library s a haven for those who appreciate both literature and serenity. Thoughtfully designed as a peaceful escape, it invites visitors to lose themselves in books. Each volume in our curated collection is marked with a unique Ex-Libris, making every book a treasured piece of our heritage.

Cinema Miró is more than a screening room; it’s a captivating space inspired by classic Hollywood theaters. A gateway to the past and present of cinema, it offers exclusive film series. Now, it aims to become a hub for emerging filmmakers, showcasing the short films of young, talented directors.

The thermal pool with sauna offers a true oasis of calm in the heart of bustling Madrid. It’s an ideal retreat to unwind and rejuvenate both mind and body, providing a serene escape from city life. Surrounded by a creatively designed environment, it’s the perfect setting for relaxation and renewal.

Architecture forms the foundation of our cultural vision. Every detail, from the façade to the interiors, reflects our artistic approach. Architect Álvaro Sans led the project, with Adriana Sans handling interior design, both from ASAH studio. Construction was managed by Madrid-based architect Pedro Alcaraz.

The rooms and suites, fully equipped and featuring warm, golden tones, have been designed to offer a stay full of exclusivity in the heart of Madrid. Gustave Doré’s engravings for the 1863 edition of Don Quixote crown each room, joining an inspiring atmosphere that invites relaxation and disconnection.

A unique fusion of gastronomy and live entertainment that will transform your dinner into a unique evening. Maché is the result of mixing the artistic world with the gastronomical. It is chewing, devouring or enriching yourself with arts and culinary elaborations.

Maché is located in the old building of the Spanish Railway Association. Its spectacular stained glass windows, work of the Maumejean House workshop, preside over the stay in a place where architecture and history come together to offer an elevated sensory experience.
