When the cold starts to be felt among the buildings of Manhattan, New York changes its appearance. Lights appear on the avenues, ice rinks return, shop windows prepare for the festivities, and parks and squares fill with small stalls where you can look for gifts or warm up with a hot chocolate. Christmas here is experienced on the move: walking from one neighbourhood to another and discovering how each area interprets these weeks in its own way.
The Christmas markets in New York are an essential part of that atmosphere. Bryant Park, Union Square and Columbus Circle concentrate some of the main open-air markets in Manhattan, while Grand Central Terminal offers a covered alternative amidst the historic architecture of Vanderbilt Hall. NYC Tourism + Conventions identifies these spaces among the city's standout markets for the festive season.
The 2026 season begins especially early. Bryant Park will open its Holiday Shops on 28 October, while the Grand Central Holiday Fair will begin on 9 November. Union Square and Columbus Circle also return in 2026, although not all their definitive visitor calendars are published yet. This guide uses only dates confirmed by their organisers and expressly indicates those that remain pending.

In New York, there is no single moment that marks the arrival of the festivities. The city's transformation begins gradually during November and accelerates around Thanksgiving, which in 2026 is celebrated on 26 November. That day will also see the 100th edition of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, one of the events that traditionally accompany the start of the New York festive season.
One of the great symbols is the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. The tradition dates back to the thirties and the annual lighting ceremony began in 1933. As of the verification date of this guide, Rockefeller Center has not yet published the details for the 2026 tree, so a date for its lighting is not anticipated.
The schedule for The Rink at Rockefeller Center is confirmed. The rink, which first opened on Christmas Day in 1936, celebrates its 90th anniversary during the 2026-2027 season and will be open from 10 October 2026 to 27 March 2027. Skating here, under the tree during the Christmas weeks, has been part of the city's winter for decades.
Another family tradition takes place at Macy's Herald Square. Santaland will return on 27 November 2026 with a renewed experience to visit Santa Claus. Macy's confirms that booking will be necessary and that general bookings will begin on 20 November.
But New York Christmas is not limited to Midtown. In Brooklyn, the residents of Dyker Heights have been decorating their homes with elaborate Christmas lights for decades. NYC Tourism + Conventions documents this annual custom and traditionally places some of the best-known displays between 83rd and 86th streets and 11th and 13th avenues. The specific dates for the decorations depend on each home, so a general calendar for 2026 is not established here.
New York also celebrates a festive season marked by its cultural diversity. From 4 to 12 December 2026, the large menorahs at Grand Army Plaza, both in Brooklyn and Manhattan, will be lit each night during Hanukkah, accompanied by music, latkes and children's gifts.
Shows are another characteristic element of these weeks. The Christmas Spectacular Starring the Radio City Rockettes will be performed at Radio City Music Hall from 4 November 2026 to 4 January 2027. And on 31 December, Times Square will once again host the New Year's Eve celebration around its traditional Ball Drop.

Among the main markets, the first to open will be the Holiday Shops at Bank of America Winter Village, in Bryant Park. Its commercial season will begin on 28 October 2026 and continue until 3 January 2027. The market is made up of small European-inspired kiosks distributed along the park's walkways, squares and terraces.
The next major market with a fully confirmed schedule is the Grand Central Holiday Fair, which will open on 9 November 2026 and remain in Vanderbilt Hall until 24 December.
The Union Square Holiday Market will also return in 2026. Urbanspace places its season between mid-November and Christmas and confirms that it will bring together small businesses, artisans, designers and creators, although it still has the exact calendar for visitors pending.
For the Columbus Circle Holiday Market, Urbanspace also confirms its return in 2026. There is operational documentation for vendors that points to December, but the market's public page does not yet present a definitive calendar for visitors; for the sake of prudence, its dates remain pending in this guide.

The Bryant Park market allows you to concentrate a good part of the New York winter in a single place. Holiday Shops by Urbanspace is an open-air, European-inspired market whose small kiosks, designed specifically for the park, occupy its walkways, squares and terraces. Merchants include artisans from New York and elsewhere, with local crafts, artisanal products and gifts.
Around it are the Winter Village ice rink and The Lodge, an independent catering area. This combination allows you to alternate shopping with skating and a stop to eat or have something hot without leaving the park.
In 2026, the Holiday Shops will be open Monday to Friday from 11am to 8pm and Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 8pm. Some shops may extend their hours during periods of higher footfall.
🗓️ Dates: 28 October 2026 - 3 January 2027.
📍 Location: Bryant Park, Manhattan.
The Union Square Holiday Market is one of the seasonal markets with the longest history in Manhattan. Urbanspace notes that it was founded in 1993 and focuses its selection on small businesses, artisans, creators, designers and handmade products.
Its location is part of its appeal: the stalls are set up next to Union Square, in an especially well-connected area of Manhattan. Urbanspace indicates for 2026 that it is looking for local artisans, manufacturers and designers, in addition to accepting food and drink proposals.
Available documentation places the season between mid-November and Christmas, but the exact times and dates are still pending. Therefore, calendars from previous seasons or estimates from secondary sources are not included in the article.
🗓️ Dates: pending confirmation for 2026.
📍 Location: Union Square, Manhattan.
Next to the south-west entrance of Central Park, the Columbus Circle Holiday Market combines Christmas shopping with one of the most recognisable urban environments in Manhattan.
Urbanspace describes this European-inspired market as a space with more than 100 artisanal stalls, with handmade gifts ranging from jewellery and home decoration to gastronomic specialities and festive products.
Its location allows you to link the market with a walk through Central Park or continue towards Midtown and Rockefeller Center. Urbanspace confirms the 2026 edition and already has documentation for vendors, but the public page aimed at visitors does not yet offer the definitive calendar.
🗓️ Dates: pending confirmation for 2026.
📍 Location: Columbus Circle, Manhattan.
The Grand Central Holiday Fair differs from the others because it is held completely indoors, inside Vanderbilt Hall, at Grand Central Terminal.
The market occupies approximately 6,000 square feet —about 557 m²— and is dedicated to artisanal products. Grand Central confirms among its offering handmade jewellery, ceramics and works of art.
Its location also allows you to discover the interior of one of New York's great historic buildings while you shop. In 2026 it will be open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 7pm and Sundays from 11am to 6pm until 16 December. Between 17 and 23 December it will operate from 10am to 8pm and on the 24th, from 10am to 6pm. It will be closed on Thanksgiving Day.
🗓️ Dates: 9 November - 24 December 2026.
📍 Location: Vanderbilt Hall, Grand Central Terminal, 89 East 42nd Street, Manhattan.
Talking about Christmas food in New York requires distinguishing between two things: what is actually sold in its markets and the gastronomic customs of American holidays. The city brings together traditions from very different communities, so there is no single menu that can be presented with rigour as “New York Christmas food”.
Bryant Park allows us to be much more specific. The Lodge, inside Winter Village, confirms for the 2026-2027 season an offering that includes artisanal hot chocolate, churros, s'mores, mulled wine, artisanal sausages and Bavarian pretzels.
Hot chocolate fits especially well with the image of the city's markets: New York's own official tourism organisation mentions it when presenting the festive markets of Bryant Park, Union Square, Columbus Circle and other commercial spaces of the season.
Central European inspiration is also perceived in Bryant Park. Stout Sausage Co. expressly relates its artisanal sausages to the tradition of German Christmas markets and proposes accompanying them with potatoes or a Bavarian pretzel. The Lodge Bar, for its part, includes mulled wine, a spiced hot drink especially associated with winter.
S'mores provide a more American profile: they normally combine toasted marshmallow, chocolate and biscuit, and in Bryant Park they have an operator dedicated specifically to these preparations. Churros and artisanal hot chocolate from Cafe 'cito are also documented.
The diversity of the New York festivities introduces other foods into the December calendar. During Hanukkah, latkes —fried potato pancakes— are part of the official celebrations of the large menorahs at Grand Army Plaza. In 2026 there will be hot latkes during the lightings from 4 to 12 December. They are mentioned as a Hanukkah tradition in New York, not as Christmas market food.
The classic American Christmas dinner can include preparations such as turkey, but the sources provided do not allow us to state with sufficient precision that there is a specifically New York Christmas menu consisting of turkey, glazed ham, roast beef, lasagne, eggnog or hot cider. For that reason, they are not presented as “typical New York dishes” nor as products guaranteed in the markets.
Regarding shopping, the variety is better documented. Union Square selects small businesses, artisans, designers and creators; Columbus Circle announces jewellery, decoration and artisanal gifts; Grand Central confirms handmade jewellery, ceramics and art; and Bryant Park brings together local crafts, artisanal products and gifts from both New York and other places.
Thus, rather than looking for a single “typical” souvenir, the markets allow you to get closer to small producers and designers in a city where commercial diversity is part of the celebration itself.

The Christmas markets in New York have different schedules, so it is advisable to check which ones will remain open according to your travel dates.
The Grand Central Holiday Fair will close on 24 December 2026, coinciding with Christmas Eve. That last day it will be open from 10am to 6pm.
The Holiday Shops at Bryant Park will continue after Christmas and New Year's Eve, until 3 January 2027. The ice rink and The Lodge will remain open even longer, until 28 February 2027, but they have a schedule independent of the commercial market.
Union Square takes place between mid-November and Christmas according to Urbanspace, although a specific closing date is not yet published here because the definitive visitor calendar for 2026 is pending.
Columbus Circle also has its 2026 edition confirmed. Urbanspace's operational documentation for vendors includes December, but to maintain the same verification criteria throughout the article, we are waiting for the publication of the final public calendar before presenting its dates as official for travellers.
INNSiDE New York NoMad is the Meliá Hotels International establishment selected for visiting the Christmas markets in Manhattan. Its existence as a Meliá hotel in New York is also documented in the group's corporate information.
| Hotel | Nearby market | Distance/transport | Approximate time | Advantage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| INNSiDE New York NoMad | Union Square Holiday Market | Travel within Manhattan | Varies according to route and transport | Good base for visiting the Manhattan markets |
From this area of Manhattan it is possible to organise different routes to Union Square, Bryant Park, Grand Central and Columbus Circle. Instead of setting travel times that can vary according to traffic, walking or public transport, it is more useful to organise visits by area.
Union Square can be combined with southern Manhattan, while Bryant Park and Grand Central allow for a joint route through Midtown. Columbus Circle can be reserved for another day together with Central Park and Rockefeller Center.

New York Christmas continues far beyond the stalls. At Rockefeller Center, The Rink will be open from 10 October 2026 and the Holiday Chalets will return between 6 November and 2 January. Details of the 2026 Christmas tree, however, have not yet been officially announced.
At Macy's Herald Square, Santaland will open on 27 November with a completely renewed proposal for 2026. General bookings will be free and mandatory, with the booking system opening on 20 November.
Brooklyn offers a different kind of Christmas. In Dyker Heights, the facades of the houses are transformed each year through decorations created by their own residents. It is not a municipal spectacle or a market, but a consolidated neighbourhood tradition that has been attracting visitors for decades.
It is also worth looking beyond strictly Christmas celebrations. New York experiences December as a multicultural festive season. From 4 to 12 December, the lightings of the large menorahs in Manhattan and Brooklyn will celebrate Hanukkah with music, latkes and children's activities.
The Holiday Train Show at the New York Botanical Garden, in the Bronx, will be held from 14 November 2026 to 10 January 2027. The exhibition uses natural materials to reproduce nearly 200 recognisable buildings and places in New York. The Bronx Zoo Holiday Lights, for its part, will take place from 21 November to 3 January, with more than 400 animal-inspired lanterns, light shows and other activities.
And the end of December leads inevitably towards Times Square. On 31 December, the traditional ball drop will once again welcome the New Year before hundreds of thousands of people gathered in the area and an international audience following the broadcast.
Perhaps that is one of the peculiarities of Christmas in New York: it does not happen in a single place. It can start among the small stalls of Bryant Park, continue with a hot chocolate, lead to the lights of a house in Brooklyn and end under the illuminated buildings of Midtown. Buying a small gift, sharing something hot after walking through the cold or stopping for a few minutes in front of an illuminated tree are simple gestures, but they are also a very New York way of enjoying these weeks in company.
