Praia de Santa Maria on the island of Sal is the most famous beach in the country. And one of the best in the world! Santiago Beach is the largest of all the beaches and a great place for all kinds of water sports. In the capital city of Praia you can enjoy charming walks through the picturesque old town full of colourful streets and food markets. The old capital, Cidade Velha, is home to the hilltop Real de San Felipe fort, which is also definitely worth a visit. If you’re planning to visit Cape Verde on holiday, you can can get away from all the stress of your daily routine on Boa Vista Island, home to the Viana desert. Santo Antao Island is extremely vertical and full of ravines and valleys. The Salinas de Pedra de Lume were formed in the crater of an ancient volcano and are a National Cultural Heritage site.

The official currency used is the Cape Verdean escudo. We recommend you carry cash.
The official language is Portuguese, but the most widely spoken language is Cape Verdean Creole, also recognised as a national language.
