White sand, transparent waters, tropical vegetation and a much quieter atmosphere than in other parts of the coast. This is Playa Xpu-Há, one of those corners of the Riviera Maya that is worth discovering if you want to enjoy the Mexican Caribbean without having to stray too far from the main tourist areas.
Located between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, Playa Xpu-Há in Mexico offers a cinematic landscape, but with an important difference compared to other more touristy and well-known destinations: here the atmosphere is much quieter. It is a beach that stretches out in front of a bay with calm, shallow waters, surrounded by vegetation, small establishments and different spaces to spend the day.
The name Xpu-Há comes from the Mayan language and is usually translated as "water that springs", a name very much related to the natural characteristics of this area of Quintana Roo. And you may not know it, but a huge network of underground rivers and cenotes stretches beneath the ground of the peninsula, feeding a large part of the region's ecosystems.
One of the great advantages of Playa Xpu-Há in the Riviera Maya is that you can plan your visit in many different ways. If you want, you can simply lie on the sand and enjoy water of incredible quality, but there is also the possibility of snorkelling, kayaking, paddle surfing or enjoying Mexican gastronomy by the sea.
If you are preparing a route through Quintana Roo and have this beach among your goals, in this tourist guide to Playa Xpu-Há you will find all the information you need to know: where it is, how to get there, what you can do and what places are worth visiting in the surrounding area.

The first thing that catches your attention is the natural appearance of Xpu-Há, where the light sand contrasts with the blue and turquoise of the Caribbean, while the tropical vegetation reaches practically to the beach area. In addition, the surroundings of Xpu-Há are surrounded by cenotes and freshwater formations that allow you to discover another of the most representative natural characteristics of the Riviera Maya.
Unlike other much more urbanised beaches in the Riviera Maya, here you will not have the feeling of being in the middle of a large tourist city. The environment is more open and quiet, which offers a greater sense of connection with nature. For this reason, it is an especially interesting option for families and travellers who are looking to enjoy the Caribbean in a relaxed atmosphere.
Another of its great attractions is the water, as the bay offers shallow areas and, when sea conditions are favourable, it is especially pleasant for swimming and practising water activities. Even so, the state of the sea can change depending on the time of year you travel and the weather conditions.
As for what to do at Playa Xpu-Há, you have many entertainment options. From relaxing on a sun lounger at the beach clubs and eating by the sea to practising different water activities, such as snorkelling, kayaking or trying your hand at paddle surfing. Furthermore, as it is so close to several cenotes, you can combine a few hours of sun and sea with a visit to these natural spaces in the same day.
