Surrounded by imposing rocky cliffs covered in green pine trees that drop directly into crystal-clear waters, Illa Roja beach offers a spectacular panoramic view, with a much quieter and more natural atmosphere than other areas of the Catalan coast.
Located in the picturesque municipality of Begur, in the very heart of the Costa Brava in Girona, this cove is one of the most iconic postcards of the entire Mediterranean coast, named after the large reddish rock that stands out in front of the sea. In fact, many people come here looking for that very characteristic landscape.
The Illa Roja beach in Begur is also one of the best-known naturist beaches in Catalonia, although the atmosphere is usually very quiet and totally respectful. You won't find any large promenades or high-rise buildings here.

What makes Illa Roja beach special is precisely the natural environment that surrounds it and the feeling of disconnection it conveys even before you reach the sand.
The beach is about 180 metres long and is characterised by coarse, deep golden sand that contrasts sharply with the transparent turquoise waters and the imposing rock walls that protect it from the Tramuntana wind.
These are some of the main features of Illa Roja beach that set it apart from the rest:
The large central rock: The colossal reddish rocky "island" that gives the cove its name changes its appearance according to the tides. At high tide it is surrounded by water, while at low tide it joins the sand, allowing you to walk freely.
Historical naturist tradition: It is one of the most famous, oldest and most respected nudist beaches in Catalonia. Although access is open to everyone, the vast majority practise naturism in total harmony with the surroundings.
Virgin and protected environment: As it is sheltered by high rocky cliffs and surrounded by lush pine forests, you will not find any buildings on the seafront in this cove, which preserves its natural essence.
Deep and crystal-clear waters: The seabed of the beach is exceptionally pure, ideal for snorkelling enthusiasts, although you should bear in mind that the water gets deep very quickly just a few steps from entering the sea.
To make the most of this corner of the Costa Brava, it is essential that you know how to locate Illa Roja beach on the map of the Baix Empordà region, as it is a virgin cove hidden between cliffs, and access requires a bit of walking.
The cove is strategically located in the municipality of Begur, between the beach of Racó (to the north) and the beautiful cove of Sa Riera (to the south), in one of the most beautiful areas of the Costa Brava.

Due to its virgin terrain, there is no direct access by car or public transport to the sand itself, and it is necessary to walk for a few minutes.
From the platja del Racó (Begur): It is the fastest and easiest way to get to Illa Roja beach. You just have to park in the vicinity of the platja del Racó and take the Camí de Ronda that heads south. After a walk of just 10 minutes, you will reach the stairs that go down directly to the cove.
From Cala Sa Riera (Begur): If you prefer a path with slightly more vertigo-inducing views, you can take the Camí de Ronda heading north from Sa Riera. This section involves climbing up and down some stone stairs among Mediterranean pines, offering imposing panoramic views before descending to Illa Roja in about 15 minutes.
Given that the beach is protected by cliffs, you will have to leave your vehicle in the surrounding area. The best option is to use the regulated parking area (blue zone in summer) located just behind the Playa de Racó or in the public car parks enabled in Sa Riera.
My recommendation is to get up quite early to arrive as soon as possible, as parking in these areas tends to fill up quickly by mid-morning due to the high influx of people in the whole Begur area.

To enjoy the Illa Roja cove it is important that you bring good footwear, because from the car to the sand you will have to cover several stretches of dirt, stones and quite steep stairs. I recommend good trainers or hiking sandals with good grip to avoid slipping.
Another aspect to take into account is the supply of provisions, as there are no shops or fountains on the beach. In the summer season, there is a beach bar-restaurant on the sand itself, with catering service in the same beach environment.
Also, keep in mind that the imposing cliff wall casts a very long shadow as the afternoon progresses, so try to arrive early if you want to lie in the sun.
This paradisiacal beach in the Baix Empordà has an excellent location for continuing with plans after leaving the water, combining beaches, viewpoints and charming villages within a few kilometres.
The Camino de Ronda passes very close to the beach and is one of the most beautiful walks on the entire Costa Brava. From here you will have incredible views over the sea, the cliffs and the small hidden coves of the area.
Located next to the municipality of Begur, the village of Pals is one of the most spectacular and well-preserved medieval sites in Spain. Getting lost without haste through its pedestrian stone alleyways, admiring its Gothic arches, its walls and the imposing Torre de las Horas will make you feel as if you had stepped back in time.
The village of Begur is well worth a visit. Its streets have a special charm and from the castle there are spectacular views of the entire coast.
