The city of the “tinajones” (huge terracotta urns)

Camagüey

Located on the vast plains of central Cuba, the city of Camagüey surprises and delights visitors with its labyrinth of narrow streets that make it very different to other colonial Latin American cities. The charm of its old quarter, its winding alleys and lanes, and pretty squares and colourful facades led it to be named a World Heritage Site in 2008.

Located in the province of the same name, between Ciego de Ávila and Las Tunas, Camagüey is located 7 km from Ignacio Agramonte International Airport, 100 km from Playa Santa Lucía, to the north and 80 km from Santa Cruz del Sur, to the south. It is Cuba’s third biggest city, after Havana and Santiago de Cuba, and a transit point for people who cross the island from one end to the other.

Its historical centre is a lattice of narrow alleyways that lead into picturesque squares. Discover pretty spots, such as Ignacio Agramonte Park, Plaza de los Trabajadores and Plaza del Carmen, where the sculptures by Martha Jiménez called Las Chismosas invite you to sit down and share in the gossip. The city, formerly known as Santa María del Puerto del Príncipe, is dotted with Baroque churches and temples with gilded altars. In fact, it has the highest number of churches of any city in the country. The Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria and the Church of La Soledad are just two superb examples, and also worth visiting is the spectacular colonial Church of La Merced. The city is also famous for its characteristic “tinajones”, huge earthenware urns that were used to store water during the dry season and that today decorate many of its streets.

The two largest archipelagos of the island, Sabana-Camagüey, to the north, and Jardines de la Reina, to the south, border the province of Camagüey. Together they contain the highest number of islands and keys throughout Cuba, and boast a wealth of natural wildlife, such as the largest pink flamingo reserve. On the north coast, just 100 km from Camagüey, is Playa de Santa Lucía, which extends for 21 km, bathed by warm turquoise waters and golden sand. The ideal location for water sports, fishing, sailing and scuba diving with various diving sites and near an extensive coral reef where you can see a wide range of marine wildlife and several sunken shipwrecks. In the west, at Los Cocos beach, enjoy spectacular views of Colón Lighthouse at Cayo Sabinal, where you can also discover the idyllic Playa Bonita and Playa Los Pinos, on the other side of the Canal de la Boca.
