Information about the destination

Meliá Atlanterra is located in Bahía de la Plata, right on the seafront, 4 km from the small fishing village of Zahara de los Atunes, next to the luxury residential area of Atlanterra. This internationally and nationally popular and privileged enclave is ideal for all travellers who are looking for peace and quiet and who want to enjoy their free time.

ZAHARA DE LOS ATUNES

Zahara is a small fishing village which still maintains a relaxed and authentic atmosphere. Located between the towns of Tarifa and Barbate, it is an hour from the cities of Cadiz and Algeciras. Many of the tourists who travel to Zahara are unaware of the history that lies in the sands of the beaches. It’s interesting to learn that it was the Phoenicians who first landed here, attracted by the richness of the fishing.

Roman and Arabic influences can still be perceived in the regional architecture and gastronomy. This is why there are so many defensive strongholds in the area, including Zahara Castle which was built in the 16th century, which were built not just for defensive purposes but also as homes for the nobility and royalty who came to Zahara to visit the famous tuna traps.

LEISURE, CULTURE AND SPORT

Zahara de los Atunes is also a destination for all the family. The beaches are idyllic and there are many different leisure, cultural and sporting options in the surrounding area.

  • Great number of restaurants, beach bars and clubs
  • Wide cultural offer. Famous night-time concerts
  • Local artisan markets, one of the most popular  places visited by tourists
  • Boat trips around the beautiful Zahara waters, horse riding along the beach or hiking routes in the Estrecho Natural Park
