Located in the province of Badajoz, Mérida was founded by the Romans in 25 BC. The theatre, the amphitheatre and its temple dedicated to the goddess Diana are some of the best preserved archaeological sites in Spain and the ensemble was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1993 due to its historical and monumental importance.
This Roman heritage can be appreciated at the National Museum of Roman Art, where you can learn about the city’s past through an interesting collection of objects from Mérida.
The Extremadura capital has many recognised cultural events, including the popular Classical Theatre Festival held every summer, which is one of the most important of its kind in Spain.
