Do you only have one day to visit Madrid? Then we help you explore the most famous landmarks on your visit to the city.
Let’s start by enjoying a hearty breakfast in our cafeteria. And now you're ready to start the day! Leave the hotel turning right and then take the first street to the right, walk down Santa Engracia street until you reach Plaza del Pintor Sorolla where you will see the Iglesia metro station (Line 1).
In just 10 minutes you will reach the Sol metro station where our tour starts, at Puerta del Sol, the centre of Madrid. Wander around the square and don’t forget to take a photo of yourself next to the Bear and the Madrone tree statue, one of the heraldic symbols of the city. Walk to the Teatro Real, go around it and there you will discover the Royal Palace with the Nuestra Señora de la Almudena Cathedral. Enjoy the stunning architecture. You can visit the inside of the palace and Sabatini Gardens or the Campo del Moro.
Along Mayor street we enter the Old Madrid. Here you cannot miss Plaza Mayor, stop and enjoy a snack: How about a beer and a calamari baguette sitting on one of the terraces? Then take a look at the old stamp and coin shops, maybe you will find a treasure... Leave the Plaza through the Arco de Cuchilleros (Arch of Cutlers) and lose yourself in the narrow streets of this area.
And it's time to eat. Enjoy a magnificent Madrid stew in one of the traditional restaurants in the city centre: La Bola, Taberna Daniela, Casa Labra, Lhardy, La Taberna del Alabardero... are you daring enough to try one of their specialties?
To help digest the food, walk down the emblematic Alcalá street. Soon we will reach the Paseo del Arte (Paseo del Prado) where you will find three of the world's best art galleries: the Prado Museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and the Reina Sofia Art Museum. Maybe you could spend a couple of hours of your day in Madrid to see some of their most important works.
Soon you will come to the Cibeles Fountain, a goddess that has become a symbol of the city and where Real Madrid, one of the world’s most important football teams, celebrates its triumphs. A few metres away you will see Puerta de Alcalá. Take the opportunity to take some photos before entering the Parque del Retiro, the true "green lung" of the city. Walk countless paths, sit on a terrace or take a boat out onto the lake. You'll love the experience!
Retrace your steps and enjoy the Gran Vía and its historic buildings. Also discover its more glamorous side: the Gran Via of cinemas and musical theatres. Here the 'Broadway of Madrid' starts. Take advantage to do some shopping at the countless shops or buy a ticket for the musical you really want to see.
We arrive then at Plaza de España where there is a monument in commemoration of Miguel de Cervantes and two of his most iconic characters: Don Quixote and Sancho Panza. Walk to the Temple of Debod and admire how the last of the sun’s rays land on this ancient Egyptian monument. Then all we have to do is enjoy dinner and drinks in the area of Princess and return to the hotel which only takes 10 minutes by metro or taxi from here.
