  • Film making has played an important role in Almeria since the 1960s
  • The city has been the setting of important international productions such as El Cid, Lawrence of Arabia, Patton, Lost Command, Play Dirty, Never Say Never Again and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
  • And every year in early December there is an International Short Film Festival held here, Almeria en Corto, which has become one of the best annual meetings for professionals and fans of short films from around the world

  • Traditional dishes include paprika soup (caldo colorao), Moorish soup, bravas potatoes in ajopollo or with alioli, garlic soup, cuttlefish in sauce, tabernero (a type of spicy ratatouille), gachas tortas (oat cakes), migas de sémola, fresh broad beans, pickles, gurullos (pasta made from semolina), la fritá de Suflí (roasted pepper and tomato salad) and the olla de trigo (stew made from wheat, chickpeas, different meat and wild fennel)
  • Fish and shellfish such as monkfish, mackerel, mullet, octopus, squid, cuttlefish, Almeria red prawn and the famous “galanes”
  • Cakes and pastries such as papaviejos, deditos de Jesús, fried milk, alpujarreña puff pastry, tortas de chicharrones, date cake, soplillos, cream tubes, pastries and quince cake
