Munich, city of culture and ancient traditions, is the capital of Bavaria and is located on the River Isar north of the Bavarian Alps. Today, Munich is considered a major economic power and is one of the largest industrial cities in Germany, famous for its elegant shops, trendy nightclubs, pubs and lively festivals.

MOST IMPORTANT TOURIST ATTRACTIONS IN MUNICH

  • The Marienplatz (Mary's Square). It is the central square in Munich and the hub of city life. Surrounded by the main shopping streets and restaurants in Munich
  • The New Town Hall. A magnificent building, home to the Glockenspiel, a beautiful carillon that is over 100 years old. We recommend you go at 11 am or 12:00 pm to hear the Glockenspiel bells and see 32 life-size figures relive historical events in Bavaria. (In between March and October it is at 5 pm and at 9 pm as well)
  • The three art galleries: ancient, new and modern, all with valuable works of art by major European artists
  • Siegestor (Victory Gate). Built to commemorate a war that involved the Bavarians. After its reconstruction it became an emblem of peace for the city of Munich
  • Cathedral of Our Lady of Munich. Located in the city centre in the Frauenplatz and considered one of the most important tourist attractions of the city
  • Hofbräuhaus. Munich is home to the world's most famous brewery: Hofbräuhaus. It was built in 1589 and has some old wooden tables on which you can find names, dates and comments that are over 100 years old
  • Dachau Concentration Camp. The Dachau concentration camp, 10 kilometres northwest of Munich, was one of the first concentration camps in Nazi Germany and became a model for all of the other camps in the Third Reich
  • The English Garden. The largest park in Munich
  • Deutsches Museum (German Museum). Dedicated to science and technology, and considered one of the largest in the world. In addition, there are exhibits on astronomy, transport, mining, printing and photography
  • Munich Olympic Stadium. Site of the 1972 Olympics

TYPICAL FOOD

  • The white cooked sausages (Weißwurst) that originated in Munich in 1857
  • The Leberkäs, a kind of hot sausage, usually accompanied by a bread roll (Leberkässemmel). Shaped like a box unlike most cooked sausages
  • Beer. The most popular is the Helles, a bottom-fermented beer. Also well known is the Weißbier, top-fermented in which 50% of the grain has to be wheat. Traditional brands in the city are: Löwenbräu, Paulaner, Spatenbräu, Augustiner, Hacker-Pschorr and Hofbräu

  • The name München, means place of the monks. Benedictine monks founded the city, hence the city coat of arms has a monk on it
  • The official city colours are the black and gold of the Holy Roman Empire from the time of Louis of Bavaria
