  • Founded in the 17th century as Charles Town and destroyed by the Spanish in 1684
  • Rebuilt in 1695 and renamed Nassau
  • During the first years of the 18th century it was proclaimed a pirate republic
  • Finally, the British Empire regained control and drove out the pirates. Thus, began a period of growth with several families settling in Nassau and the surrounding islands
